HOW SHE MOVE
RYAN: Given that “So You Think You Can Dance” is our favorite show, I’m curious to hear how you liked “How She Move,” the latest dance movie, which you saw without me.
CAROLINE: I didn’t love the movie, but the dancing is really good. Actually, it’s more stepping than dancing, which I’m not quite as into. But I know the kids love it. There have been countless movies of this ilk, and this one completely sticks to the same formula.
RYAN: Did Oprah produce it?
CAROLINE: Sadly, no. It’s the exact same story as all the other dance movies: struggling kid, family drama, financial hardship. In this case, her sister is a junkie who uses up all the family money and dies anyway. Our heroine needs the money to get back into the private school she used to attend, so of course, she has to enter the big dance competition and win lots of dough.
CAROLINE: We’ve seen it in “8 Mile” and countless other dance movies like “Take the Lead” and “Step Up.”
RYAN: How’s the soundtrack?
CAROLINE: Lots of hardcore rap and hip hop. Not really my bag. I wasn’t very into the movie for the first bit, mainly because it was so predictable. But then when they finally get to the big step competition, Step Monster, it gets really good.
RYAN: And by that, you mean the dancing.
CAROLINE: For sure. And it’s mostly stepping, but they do some cool gymnastics and stuff too.
RYAN: I like athletic dance. How was the choreography?
CAROLINE: Really good. All the kids in it are great. And of course, exactly what you think will happen at the end happens.
RYAN: So do you recommend seeing it in the theater?
CAROLINE: Not so much. I’d recommend it for the kids, but I certainly don’t think adults will care much about it. And frankly, I thought America’s youth would all run to see it last weekend, but it only made about $4 million. It didn’t even crack the top 10. Overall, it’s got a good message about following your dreams, staying in school, drugs are bad, etc. But other than that, it’s exactly what you think it will be.
RYAN: Sounds like another formulaic dance movie.
CAROLINE: It’s a January release for sure.
