HOT TUB TIME MACHINE
CAROLINE: I have to admit that I found the trailer for Hot Tub Time Machine kind of amusing. Enough to pay my own money to see it this weekend after missing the screening last week.
RYAN: Ugh, not me. I honestly don’t know that you could have paid me to join you.
CAROLINE: Well, honestly, it’s probably not worth your $12.50. It’s funny, but not brilliantly hilarious or anything. I did laugh out loud though, and I loved all the ’80s music of course.
RYAN: I just felt like all the jokes looked so sophomoric and stupid.
CAROLINE: Some of them were. It had moments of the typical gross-out humor that we expect from a movie like this. But then other scenes were genuinely funny.
RYAN: I find that Rob Corddry very irritating.
CAROLINE: Believe me, so do I; but he’s actually pretty hilarious in this. I was quite surprised. He has a hilarious moment in the beginning where he’s air drumming and guitaring to a Mötley Crüe song and I was dying.
RYAN: That sounds like more your humor than mine. How was the rest of the cast?
CAROLINE: John Cusack is still adorable. The man does not seem to age. And Craig Robinson is also very funny. His character was probably the most likable. And then there’s this random kid playing John Cusack’s nephew who was kind of lame. All of his jokes fell flat.
RYAN: And isn’t Chevy Chase in it?
CAROLINE: Yeah, he’s the hot tub repairman who’s sort of guiding them through the time travel thing. Oh, and Crispin Glover has a funny part as the hotel bellhop, which is great since he was in Back to the Future.
RYAN: And I love Crispin as the knave in the current Alice in Wonderland. Isn’t this movie just typical guy humor though?
CAROLINE: Mostly, yes. Lots of drinking, drug and ejaculation jokes. And some gay ones. But that can still be very funny if done right.
— BOTTOM LINE —
CAROLINE: Basically it’s one of those movies that doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. The title tells you what you’re getting into. Yes, it’s silly and preposterous, but we’re all in on it together. It’s nothing fabulous though, and it clearly didn’t do that well at the B.O. this weekend; only about $13 million. So while I laughed and was definitely entertained, it’s not something you need to rush out to see.
