Hot Pursuit Review
RYAN: I’m happy to be joined by my special Chicago associate Erin Primmer for this review. We met and worked together at The Jerry Springer Show in the late 90’s and always laugh so. Ugh when we’re together so it makes sense to see this new comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara. I was bracing myself going in that this film would land and do lots of cliche comedy jokes of the toilet variety – competing with the typical guy comedies. But I’m so thrilled that it’s refreshing, original, funny without going for any shock-schlock. They are both great in it and at just 90 minutes, it moves at a good pace.
ERIN: I agree. It starts off a little cute but the. It totally becomes a laugh out loud movie. They were both characters with an arc, smart, witty, silly with a cleverness to it.
RYAN: They have such a spark on screen together and all the interviews they’ve been doing, you can see how much they really adore each other and that chemistry really translates. We have the term bromance for two dudes and I think we need a new phrase for Reese and Sofia – girlmance? No maybe not. But they’re brilliant together.
ERIN: I really love them as a pair. They had this whole comedic tennis match happening where they would just set things up for one another and then nail it. And they both alternated the spotlight but it was really a great sharing of the screen.
RYAN: Sofia really plays her body for all it’s worth, yet again. She type casts so much. I’d love to see her do a role like Reese did last year in Wild – natural, no makeup, drama…. I don’t know if she’ll ever get the chance because she’s such a sex symbol. And Reese really got to do more physical comedy – and she’s gorgeous but next to Sofia, they got a lot of mileage out of her apple-pie cuteness. It worked.
ERIN: There was a lot of that and it never got old. They were very creative with those jokes. I love Reese in comedy as much as in drama.
RYAN: This was a bit of a throwback to early Reese with shades of Legally Blonde and Election in there. This character was almost like a version of her Election character grown up. She’s so versatile and I love her.
ERIN: I love Sofia so much in Modern Family and she really is so dele lightbulb funny. Her timing is just so strategic.
RYAN: And the hair, makeup, costumes are all part of it too – especially Reese’s character. There’s a lot of character development there. There’s some madcap comedy and there’s some action to the story because of the crime plot. That helps the speed.
ERIN: I was also really surprised there’s a good twist in the film.
RYAN: Yes they pulled that off incredibly well. You don’t see it coming. That’s good writing and performance. And we have to talk about the cute guy in the movie – Robert Kazinsky. I grabbed your arm at one point, he’s so hot.
ERIN: Very cute! I didn’t recognize him from anything though.
RYAN: Me neither. There’s a bit of a Thelma & Louise vine at one point, looking at two women in the car.
ERIN: I totally did.
RYAN: That was obviously a drama. There are very few female-driven movies from Hollywood to begin with; but then, Bridesmadis and Melissa McCarthy have opened the door a bit to make it happen. And who would have thought of Reese and Sofia headlining a big comedy but they were great. I would happily sit through a sequel.
ERIN: Oh in a heartbeat. It’s so funny and fun, overall.
RYAN: It’s not of those movies where all the funny bits are given away in the trailer and commercials. Again, I’m just so glad it didn’t pander. It’s a surprisingly better than average comedy.
