HOMERYAN: This is a new animated family film from Dreamworks and I had really low expectations because the trailer skewed really juvenile and looks like it might not hold the interest of the adults in the audience, but I’m happy to report it’s better than expected.  I found it quite touching with comedy and a story that’s enjoyable.

ERIK: I liked it better as it went on.  I preferred the second half of the film to the first half.  It started out a bit cheesy with just a lot of bright colors.

RYAN: I really liked all the color in this. The design alters between innovative and rudimentary but I especially enjoyed seeing all the Boov emote colors based on their internal feelings. These lil aliens are sort of like minions with an actual vocab.

ERIK: This is the kind of movie that’s perfect for young kids with all the bright colors and as far as the cast goes, I liked Jim Parsons.

RYAN: He’s perfectly cast in this with a voice that gives energy and innocence, wonder and hope. He voices a character named Oh.  On the other side of acting talent we have Rihanna who is just not a good actress.

ERIK: She was bad, terrible.

RYAN: I didn’t like her in the movie Battleship either.

ERIK: She’s just not good.

RYAN: Another drawback of this film is that RIhanna performs a couple songs on teh soundtrack and when they’re used within it, it completely takes you out of it because you can recognize its her singing, just after the character she voices has dialogue.  It’s so awkward.  If she were playing a singer that might be fine, but it doesn’t make any sense in context and actually hurts the story of the film if you can identify she’s the singer.

ERIK: It ruins the suspension of disbelief especially since the character she plays is also from Barbados.  They may as well have just named her character little Rihanna.

RYAN: Her mom is voiced by J.Lo in a small part who also has a song on the soundtrack.  Then there’s the villain voiced by Steve Martin whom I initially thought sounded a lot like Kevin Kline.

ERIK: I knew it was him.

RYAN: He’s excellent.

ERIK: It’s almost like a bunch of execs came together and said, “What’s popular?” and took Rihanna, Big Bang Theory, J.Lo… and just put them all in the same childrens movie.

RYAN: It’s much better than that.  It’s very well though through and planned.  The story is cohesive and all of the action and adventure moments featured very well executed cinematography and choreography.  There’s a lot of cleverness and creativity to the story as well.

ERIK: There were some fun moments.  What I found so interesting was the very happy, upbeat open to the film where the whole human race is being relocated by aliens but it’s so happy.

RYAN: When you put it like that, yeah, it’s strange.  But it’s such a cute movie.  There’s a false ending though. I thought it ended perfectly at one point that was sweet and touching but then it goes on to be very manipulative in tying up another loose end to a subplot and I didn’t like that but it doesn’t deter from the overall film.

ERIK: It definitely gets stronger and has a universal appeal.

RYAN: As with the best family entertainment, it’s good for all ages.
