HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE by Ryan

Google me and you’ll find I’m a little biased on the subject of Harry Potter. That being said, let us take it for granted I loved this movie beyond explanation and feel I can best service this review by not ranting about how amazing it is (IT IS!) but by critically analyzing its flaws.

Taking into account Warner Brothers at first considered turing GOF into two films, due to the source material’s length, I think it may have been a good idea. Had the two parts been films in conjunction, ala Lord of the Rings, it could have worked. But alas, what we’re left with is a brilliant, albiet truncated version of Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts. And what the story gains in action, we lose in heart. Sure I cried at the film’s climax, but I think it was more out of anticipation and context (from the book).

I’ve heard friends, who haven’t read the books, say they thought the story was a bit hard to follow and choppy… they were further dissatisfied with the resolution which they thought was not paid off. But those who read the books know that’s not the point.

I think it’s cool that the movies stay faithful to the books but I really miss some of the finer plot points. And I suppose what’s true of all film adaptations is true here: the book is better. That being said, these films continue to improve upon the previous ones. And there was a lot at stake in this installment; namley, Voldemort. Such a moment is worth waiting all these years to see.

Obviously this movie is on my must see list. And it’s such a welcomed presence. We’ve been needing some serious thrilling eye candy for so long. It has been a rough year for movies; but, GOF makes up for the drought… and then some.
