Girl Most Likely Review

RYAN: This is the new dramedy starring Kristen Wiig, Annette Benning and Darren Criss.  It’s quirky and unusual and B-movie-ish but it’s a cute indie that I semi-liked.

CHUCK: It had it’s effective moments of both drama and comedy.  I love Kristen Wiig and she’s good here.

RYAN: But she’s serving up the same performance she did in Bridesmaids.  It’s her brand of humor.  Single, moving back in with mom.

CHUCK: So this is Bridesmaids 2.

RYAN: [laughs’ Not quite.  Maybe a parallel version in some respects but not as good.  I love Annette even though it looks nothing like her in the movie poster.
CHUCK: I wish they had used her more.  They could have dove further into their relationship.  They had great, great chemistry.

RYAN: They really did and I love how the mother/daughter storyline played out – how imperfect parents are.  And there are some nice qualities to this movie in terms of what you can take away that’s real, given that much is comedic and awkward.

CHUCK: And some was also absurd where I questioned whether things really needed to “go there.”  The story could have been streamlined a bit more. But there still were some good, relatable moments.

RYAN: Kristen’s on screen brother is played by Christopher Fitzgerald who I love from Broadway’s Wicked. He originated the role of Boq and it was cool to see him in the film.  It’s an unusual role but he was right for it.

CHUCK: I wish they had made a discrimination – was he mentally disabled or just quirky?

RYAN: I think he was at least autistic.  Matt Dillon was also awkward but I have to say I didn’t like where his storyline ended up in the film.  That was where the movie really lost steam for me.  But great to see Nathasha Lyonne – welcome back to the theater!

CHUCK: She’s popped up here and there over the years but it was good to see her in this positive light.

RYAN: And it’s obvious why Darren Criss was cast – they needed a younger singer.

CHUCK: And someone who’s attractive which he is.

RYAN: He’s not the best actor though.

CHUCK: Well, and going up against Annette Benning, and even Kristen Wiig, he falls short but he did fulfill what was necessary in the movie.

RYAN: Oh – the opening scene involves The Wizard of Oz.

CHUCK: I knew you’d be into that moment.  But I think this would have made a better HBO movie than an actual film.

RYAN: I liked the soundtrack, but really disliked the ending; however, the movie is generally better than that.  Still, it’s a rental.
