GHOST TOWN
RYAN: The new movie “Ghost Town” is a cross between “Ghost” and “Roxanne.” Go.
CAROLINE: I’d say it’s a little bit of “Just Like Heaven” mixed with “The Sixth Sense” minus the horror aspect. In other words, the premise isn’t at all original, but I really liked this movie nonetheless. It made me both laugh and cry.
RYAN: I can’t believe how misty-eyed you got.
CAROLINE: I actually shed several tears much to my shock. It’s a very touching film at times, though I don’t want to say too much more lest I ruin anything. But mostly it’s a comedy.
RYAN: I thought it was hilarious and before we mention the stars, I must give a shout-out to SNL’s Kristen Wiig who was great as a surgeon. It’s a well-written role for her. She’s one of my favorite people to ever grace SNL and I loved her in this movie.
CAROLINE: She’s always a treat. I’m so happy she keeps getting movie roles. But the real stars of the movie are Ricky Gervais and Greg Kinnear, both of whom are hilarious.
RYAN: Greg Kinnear looks great as usual, and gives a good performance. I think one of my favorite roles of his was in “Little Miss Sunshine,” where he’s less comedic and more of the bad guy; but I enjoyed seeing him be funny in this.
CAROLINE: As we’ve mentioned before, he’s aging beautifully. He looks fabulous and gets to wear a tux for the whole film. I’m not as familiar with Ricky Gervais because I didn’t watch the English version of “The Office,” but he’s absolutely hilarious in this movie. I’m convinced that half of his jokes had to be ad libbed because they seemed so organic and random.
RYAN: He has a bit part in one of my favorite movies of all time, “Stardust,” and he’s on HBO’s “Extras,” which I enjoy. At first, I had a hard time looking at him as a romantic lead in this movie, but I totally warmed up to his as the movie progressed. Plus he really is just hilarious. He has his own sense of comedic timing that’s as good as the best of them.
CAROLINE: I also want to mention Téa Leoni whom I’ve adored ever since “Flirting with Disaster,” one of my all-time favorite movies. She looks great too, and this was obviously filmed before the recent issues with her husband, David Duchovny, came to light. She’s so funny.
RYAN: She looked a little old to me in some scenes, but then other times she looked great.
CAROLINE: Well, she’s no spring chicken, LBH. I’m just happy to see her in a movie that’s better than the train wreck she was in last year, “You Kill Me,” with Ben Kingsley.
RYAN: Ugh.
CAROLINE: So the cast is great, and even though it doesn’t have any megastars, everyone does a good job and you’ll recognize and enjoy many of the actors. Even Cameron from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” has a little part. It’s a surprisingly sweet, poignant movie even though it’s a little derivative.
RYAN: It’s completely derivative, but if you like any of the movies we mentioned above, you’ll be into it. Plus it’s a good comedy. The laughs are sustained throughout. Bottom line?
CAROLINE: I liked this movie so much more than I expected to. I really knew very little about it going in. When you first see the trailer, you’re like, “OK so he gets bothered by dead people who only he can see? Haven’t we seen this before?” The answer is yes, but it’s different enough that I was able to thoroughly enjoy this movie. Ricky Gervais plays a total misanthrope, and then he takes this little emotional journey and I loved watching it.
RYAN: It’s a light and funny movie with a great message that they don’t hit you over the head with. It’s very cute and I definitely recommend it.
