GEORGIA RULE
CAROLINE: “Georgia Rule” opens today and I must say it was so not what I expected.
RYAN: What did you expect?
CAROLINE: I’m not sure. But I guess when you hear it’s a movie starring Lindsay Lohan as a wayward teen, you assume it’s a dumb teen flick. But it so not that. This one is definitely R-rated.
RYAN: I thought this was going to have more of the tone of “Monster-in-Law” because that’s the only other recent film with Jane Fonda. I thought it would be fluffier. But while this film is very funny, it’s also really heavy.
CAROLINE: Very intense family issues are covered. It’s a serious drama which is quite riveting, especially in the hands of three talented actresses such as Jane Fonda, Felicity Huffman and Lindsay Lohan.
RYAN: It’s interesting to me that Felicity is the only one of the “Desperate Housewives” who’s a real working film actress. And she was probably the weakest of the three is this movie.
CAROLINE: What… Are we ranking them now?
RYAN: I just didn’t think she was as good as she’s been in other things. She had a few good moments, but others were a little cheesy. I expect more from her.
CAROLINE: I didn’t feel that way. Anyway, as we remember, this film is famous for Lindsay being torn a new one last year by the head of the production company. But her performance is excellent. And she looked hot.
RYAN: I was very impressed with her performance. She plays the Angelina Jolie of this tiny Idaho town. I didn’t want to like her, but she really won me over.
CAROLINE: Let’s be honest, she’s kind of playing herself – a difficult, rebellious, drug-addled teen. But she also has to dig deeper in this movie and she definitely pulled it off.
RYAN: There were some scenes that really required her to act, and she went there and was wonderful. And I liked how you leaned over to me during the movie and noted that she wore a white top or dress in nearly every single scene.
CAROLINE: It was so strange! Maybe it was in her contract. Maybe she really likes herself in white and she thinks it shows off her spray tan the best.
RYAN: [laughs’ She’s has a healthy orangey glow. Let’s talk about the guys. I did not like Dermot Mulroney’s grayish locks.
CAROLINE: He’s getting a little older, but I thought it was working for him. He didn’t look as hot in this movie though because he wasn’t as well-shorn as he usually is. Nor was Lindsay’s love interest, the Mormon boy Harlan. At first I didn’t think he was that cute, but he grew on me as the film went on.
CAROLINE: I really liked this movie. I think I was in the right emotional frame of mind for it. It’s really intense at times, but it’s also got some light, funny moments; though I do think it’s more for a female audience since it’s mostly about women. I don’t think my dad will be seeing this film, for example.
RYAN: I’m going to speak on behalf of my community, as you are yours, and say that the gays will enjoy this film as well. I’d definitely recommend it. Leave it to Garry Marshall, the director, to balance the drama with the comedy. It’s entertaining and totally worth-seeing.
