FRIENDS WITH MONEY

RYAN: I’m very excited! A lot of good movies are starting to come out.

CAROLINE: Finally! And we had the pleasure of seeing this movie with a veritable plethora of our friends.

RYAN: Indeed. It was a really new Ryaline experience. We were joined by Cosmo and Julia…

CAROLINE: Jenny, Kathleen, and my friend Meighan as well. Good times had by all.

RYAN: Fabulous friends and fabulash film.

CAROLINE: And some popcorn.

RYAN: So what happened in this movie?

CAROLINE: Well, this is a film directed by Nicole Holofcener, and I love her and I’ve loved everything she’s ever done and she’s directed “Sex and the City” and I love that show. So I came in wanting to like this movie… and I did.

RYAN: I’m really surprised by this movie. I thought it was really interesting. It was kind of a new genre for me. It wasn’t a romantic comedy. It wasn’t a drama but it had all those elements in it. It was almost like a film about reality.

CAROLINE: It is. She does that a lot. She does real slice-of-life, heavy on the relationships – womens’ relationships with each other, love relationships, and I love that. And Catherine Keener is always in her movies which works for me.

RYAN: Catherine Keener looked great.

CAROLINE: I will say, I did notice – all these women and no plastic surgery, right?

RYAN: No Botox for sure.

CAROLINE: I mean, maybe a stray nose job here and there but these are real women, ladies and gentlemen.

RYAN: And it’s fantastic to see. I think they all look great. Joan Cusack looks fantastic.

CAROLINE: She was really great and I have to say, in a movie like this, if it weren’t actresses we love, we probably wouldn’t be as into the movie as we were.

RYAN: Fantastic cast and I have to say: Frances McDormand stole the show.

CAROLINE: Oh, she was hilarious!!

RYAN: I could see her getting another Oscar nom for this.

CAROLINE: She was HI-larious, if I may be so bold.

RYAN: You may. I loved her. She looked great. And speaking of other people who looked great, there’s a hot, hot man in this mew-vie.

CAROLINE: There’s a couple hot men in this movie!

RYAN: I was happy to see Ally McBeal’s Greg Germann, whom I adore.

CAROLINE: Yes, he’s fun.

RYAN: And I was especially happy to see Jason Isaacs; aka Lucius Malfoy of the Harry Potter movies…

CAROLINE: Wait, Ryan, do you like Harry Potter?

RYAN: He was looking hot, hot, hot.

CAROLINE: Yeah, he’s H-O-T. When you first said, I was like, “Ehh,” and then a couple of scenes later I was like, “Oh yeah, I see it.”

RYAN: He may be my #2 right behind Ewan McGregor.

CAROLINE: Really?! A bold statement.

RYAN: Well, who else?

CAROLINE: Clive Owen!

RYAN: He’s your #1.

CAROLINE: At the moment, yes.

RYAN: There was a lot of gay humor in this movie. Jokes about gay-ness. But I think it was gay humor for a straight audience because I, as a gay, didn’t find it that funny.

CAROLINE: Some of it was funny.

RYAN: I almost felt offended.

CAROLINE: Well, it’s a very straight, suburban look at what gay could be.

RYAN: Exactly.

CAROLINE: Final thought?

RYAN: Sure.

CAROLINE: It’s a small movie, not for everyone I’d venture to say. But if you like well-acted, very real, almost indie types of movies, I think this will be right up your alley.

RYAN: I think it’s a really great character study, as they’ve been called. The issues were interesting and we could definitely universally relatable themes.

CAROLINE: Yes, it’s a real-life look at marriage.

RYAN: Great performances and overall relatively satisfying except for the end.

CAROLINE: I feel like she usually ends her movies abruptly. It never all ties up at the end.

RYAN: And this is an abrupt end.
