FOOTLOOSE

RYAN: I could barely wait to see the remake of Footloose primarily because I love musicals and then whilst watching I remembered it’s really not a musical. It’s just a movie with some dancing.

CAROLINE: …just a movie. I would have seen this with you if I could have. How did you like it?

RYAN: It’s ok and I probably liked it a bit more since it pays decent homage to the original… many details are identical: like the hair, costumes, some choreography. Actually the only really updated things are an ipod and the mention of a cell phone.

CAROLINE: That’s strange. I thought this was going to be more updated than that.

RYAN: What’s the point of remaking a movie, aside from trying to bring the story to a new generation, if you’re not going to improve it someway? And honestly, I don’t know if one can improve on a classic. Not like the original Footloose is a primary classic film, but you know…

CAROLINE: Oh honey, I know. But I can’t say I’m surprised. Why, specifically, didn’t this one live up to the original?

RYAN: The main problem with this movie is that it completely lacks edge. The stakes aren’t very high, so you don’t care that it’s one man-boy’s fight for the dance. I just didn’t buy it. Maybe this Kenny Wormald, doing is best Kevin-Bacon-as-James-Dean impression, isn’t that good of an actor. He can dance but he’s not that passionate as an actor. And his Boston accent was weird, especially given he’s from there.

CAROLINE: [laughs’ Really?

RYAN: I know. Imagine Nicki Kidman doing a bad Aussie accent and there you go.

CAROLINE: That’s so rich!

RYAN: Dennis Quiad wasn’t as intimidating as the preacher as he should have been and as his wife, Andie MacDowell had, like, three lines.

CAROLINE: Cut to the chase. How was TV’s Julianne Hough?

RYAN: She’s really cute and she can act too. I wish they would have featured a bit more of her dance ability since we all know it’s there from Dancing with the Stars. But I’d say she was as good, if not better than Christina Aguilera in Burlesque.

CAROLINE: Why compare?

RYAN: Just cos.

CAROLINE: Fair enough.

RYAN: I want to get behind this one hundred percent but honestly, you’d do better to just see the original which has much more feeling and punch to it. Ultimately it’s a cute, often fun, but really dated-feeling movie that has, like, three dance scenes. The last dance was the best but not necessarily enough to justify admission.
