Fast & Furious 6 Review
RYAN: I never saw any of the previous films in this franchise and this being my first, with buzz it’s one of the better, I’m glad I evaded the previous ones. It’s fine but I’m not totally convinced.
KIM: I, on the other hand, have seen all the movies in the franchise and while they always require some suspension of disbelief, this one is taken to a whole new level.
RYAN: How does this rank among them?
KIM: I still like the first one the best. The third one is terrible and then I liked the fifth one a bit better than this one but I enjoyed this one too.
RYAN: I liked parts of this one – the cinematography is actually quite good in it. Especially at the beginning, with the car chase and flying shots, it looks great. Lots of close-ups of wheels and gears and car-parts. This is a carsploitation movie – a sub-genre of action movies wherein cars are used and abused.
KIM: I’ve heard you talk about that genre before.
RYAN: But the biggest problem with this film is the script. It’s cheesy as all get out. Like, “That’s just who you are and that’s who I am and that’s you and this is me.”
KIM: [laughs’ Right!
RYAN: There are actually lines like that and for all that I enjoy some of these actors – especially Dwayne Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez, even they couldn’t completely sell it.
KIM: I agree and the scripts were never the high point of any of the movies. They’re fun romps and that’s what people enjoy most about them. They’re unbelievable and some of the chase scenes and fights are really amazing.
RYAN: Yeah what turns me on most in an action movie is when you see an effect that’s completely original and this one certainly had a few gasp-worthy moments.
KIM: This one is definitely taken up a million notches as to what is plausible.
RYAN: We want things over the top in the audience so that’s good.
KIM: It’s just a lot of fun, edge of your seat. There are some scenes that are slow though. All the relationship dialogue just kind of drags on and on.
RYAN: It’s nice seeing Michelle on the big screen. I always enjoyed her on TV’s LOST, and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of her. She needs to do better movies though. Dwayne was well suited.
KIM: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and even the supporting cast – Ludacris and Tyrese and Luke Evans were all good in this. But Jordana Brewster lost too much weight. She’s too skinny.
RYAN: I don’t follow her enough to notice a difference.
KIM: These movies have really generated a lot throughout the franchise. Fans of the series will no doubt love it. I thought it was fun on the big screen and I like it.
RYAN: I liked it better than I thought I would but it’s not a great film.
KIM: But it’s a fun romp.
RYAN: This is a total boy movie. If you’re a fan of the fights and car crashes, this should be right up your alley – but as a movie overall, and compared to other options now playing like Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Great Gatsby, it’s just a rental.
