EVERY LITTLE STEP
CAROLINE: “Every Little Step” is a new documentary about the musical, “A Chorus Line,” both the original and the revival, the latter of which we saw together on Broadway.
RYAN: We were both totally underwhelmed by the Broadway production, but this movie was as good as we wanted the revival to be.
CAROLINE: Totally; it was infinitely better than the revival. It showed the whole audition and casting process, which was so fun to see, and as I watching the movie, I kept thinking, “Wow, I really want to see this show on Broadway!” Too bad I already did, and it sucked.
RYAN: Some of the auditioners in the movie were actually better than the people who wound up getting the parts. Maybe we just saw an off night. But this movie was so great that it made me want to get up and dance and sing and give up my whole life to become a Broadway actor.
CAROLINE: I also loved the behind-the-scenes recordings from the making of the original production. I didn’t know this show was based on the real lives and experiences of various Broadway actors and actresses. Even though I hated the revival, it’s so great to hear the songs and see the dancing in this movie. Anyone who loves Broadway even a little will enjoy it.
RYAN: It was so cool to see the unique way this show originally came about, and how the creator Michael Bennett was able to achieve his vision by just talking to actors he knew, recording their conversations and turning it into one of the most beloved musicals of all time, and a Tony winner.
CAROLINE: And don’t forget, for a while, it was the longest running Broadway musical ever. I think I can speak for you when I say we just love a movie like this. It has elements of all the things we love like singing and “So You Think You Can Dance” and Broadway and all that fun stuff. These people are all so genuinely talented that they’re a joy to watch – except for one Tice DiOrio, who, while very talented, is one of the biggest egomaniacs I’ve ever seen on screen. He couldn’t have come across as a bigger jerk.
RYAN: And it’s a bummer because he’s a choreographer on our favorite show, “So You Think You Can Dance.”
CAROLINE: I kind of love to hate him now.
RYAN: I still like him, but he’s a narcissistic arse.
CAROLINE: I just couldn’t believe the things that were coming out of his mouth; how he’s destined for bigger things, how he doesn’t need this job, which is funny given the song in the show, and that he’s going to win tons of awards someday. Then cut to him being thrilled just to get a callback.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: This movie is a must see for anyone who loves musicals or this show. It’s as good as a real movie musical.
CAROLINE: It’s so fun to see all the behind-the-scenes stuff. If you’re not a Broadway fan, this probably isn’t for you; but for those of us who love this stuff, you will not be disappointed.
