Edge of Tomorrow Review
RYAN: Finally a great Tom Cruise movie and one of his best, at that! He plays an officer in the army and it’s kids like many years in the future, sic fir blockbuster, could-be sequel to A Few Good Men and Top Gun.
MICHAEL: Totally. It’s a mash-up of Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers.
RYAN: I actually like it better than the comedy of Groundhog Day because it’s so much more than romantic comedy. Edge of Tomorrow has so much bite to it. It’s an overwhelmingly awesome moviegoing experience. It has everything; bits of comedy, romance, action, thriller, suspense… I was so edge of my seat, I was hugging my knees and jumped and freaking out, dying to know what would happen.
MICHAEL: The concept is really intricate which is cool because among the receipt comic book movies and effects, this sort of comes out of nowhere with a burst of originality. It’s exceptionally done. It reminded me of James Cameron’s Aliens.
RYAN: Going in, we were talking about how fed up we were with Tom Cruise doing the same genre so much, but if he can still deliver like this, then it’s 100% welcomed. He’s still effective as an actor. He’s a cool action star and his character in this film has a very complete story arc. It’s a great script.
MICHAEL: I was really surprised by Boll Paxton in this movie. It’s his best role in my opinion. I’ve never liked him in any other film but he was excellent in this one.
RYAN: I’ve always liked him but yes, he’s quite good here. The whole film is incredibly well cast. All the soldiers, Bredan Gleeson – brilliant doing his version of Jack Nicholson’s general in A Few Good Men. And then Emily Blunt, who I wouldn’t normally pick to be a badass action star totally pulled this off. So impressed by her and she and Tom have great chemistry.
MICHAEL: She was sort of La Femme Nakita. I loved their action sequences. They worked well together in a choreographed fashion that played really well. The humor coming from those moments really enhanced the whole film.
RYAN: The editing was very clever and added to the comedic value as well. I tend to really dislike war movies and this is sic fi, action, not war, but it has a war element and the best action scenes in this film really reminded me of those crazy, disturbing, iconic beach scenes in the opening of Saving Private Ryan. Very similar but with aliens and special effects. Amazing.
MICHAEL: This movie is smarter than your average action movie. It was nice having it laser focused on one unit and the repetition was very well done in a way that kept you into it. You leaned over to me during the film and said you thought it was like a video game…
RYAN: RIght – when you’re playing the same level of a video game over and over, the repetition, you get the timing down and breeze through the parts of the level you’ve done before. This movie made me think of that. This movie would make a great video game.
MICHAEL: It could sort of be the key to making a great game from a movie. There hasn’t been one.
RYAN: Alice in Wonderland for the Wii is terrific. But yeah, this one would be amazing.
MICHAEL: This movie draws strengths from so many different genres but seamlessly and it ends up being super original.
RYAN: The design is so cool. The aliens are fully realized. They go all the way and show you everything. The costumes and sets blew me away. It’s one of those movies that you walk out of feeling elated because it’s so good. Live. Die. Repeat. I’d like a repeat viewing of this movie.
