DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS?
CAROLINE: I really wasn’t looking forward to “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” to be honest. It doesn’t really seem like the kind of the movie that should come out this time of year, you know? And up against “Avatar” no less.
RYAN: Totally. But I’ll take a good rom com in any season, honey. And hello, Carrie Bradshaw is it. But sadly, I had to miss the screening because I was covering the “Nine” red carpet. How was it?
CAROLINE: Actually it’s surprisingly cute. Sure, it’s a broad Hollywood comedy, but it made me chuckle several times. And Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant had pretty good chemistry after all my moaning and complaining that it looked liked they had none in the trailer.
RYAN: I wasn’t that impressed with Hugh in general in the trailer; plus he’s getting a little long in the tooth. How was he?
CAROLINE: He does his usual self-effacing shtick along with his dry humor, but it works. He’s a star for a reason. And I actually bought him in this role, which I didn’t think I would.
RYAN: What about SJP? Does seeing her in another movie lessen your excitement for “Sex and the City 2”?
CAROLINE: She’s perfectly good, but I couldn’t help think about Carrie the entire time. SJP’s voice and mannerisms are totally the same here; it’s not like she created a new character or voice or anything. And she’s so known for being Carrie that it’s hard to differentiate her from that character.
RYAN: How were the costumes? Does she get cool outfits and shoes at least?
CAROLINE: For a bit, but honestly, she doesn’t look that great in this movie. Her hairstyle isn’t doing her any favors and she doesn’t get to wear cute clothes since she’s in witness protection in Wyoming most of the time.
RYAN: Oh right. They’re in the protection of Mary Steenburgen and Sam Elliott.
CAROLINE: Exactly. Those two were very well cast. But it’s yet another fish out of water movie – two people from the big city get stuck in the wild west. We’ve seen this many times before.
RYAN: So is it just totally lame and predictable?
CAROLINE: No, because they’ve added in the dynamic that this couple who’s forced into witness protection is actually on the verge of divorce. This provides several funny scenarios and a cute love story. It’s still a very obvious movie in many ways, but I liked it despite its clichés. The cast is good and it’s actually quite funny.
— BOTTOM LINE —
CAROLINE: I went into this movie with very low expectations and was pleasantly surprised at how cute and funny it was. I’m just confused as to why it’s coming out at the height of Christmas and Oscar season. It seems like it would be more suited to a January or February release. It’ll make a good rental someday.
