DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: DOG DAYS

RYAN: I really enjoyed the previous Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. And this one was directed by the guy who did the second one so I was expecting about the same.

CAROLINE: And… how was it?

RYAN: It’s pretty consistent; but not as good as the previous… rather typical for the third film in a franchise.

CAROLINE: I wouldn’t know in this case since I haven’t seen any of them.  As a general rule, I hate kids movies.

RYAN: I’ve enjoyed these movies since they’re well done.  The mix between animated illustrations from the books and live action is clever for the adaptation.  And the casting’s pretty good except for the kid’s best friend.  He’s not a good actor.  He’s too over the top compared to the rest of the cast.  He just mugs for the camera.

CAROLINE: That’s annoying.

RYAN: And I didn’t like the story as much in this one.  In the previous films Greg is being bullied whereas here it’s more about his summer crush and his relationship with his father.

CAROLINE: A rom com for the kiddies.

RYAN: A little bit.  The timing of the release is also random because it begins with the last day of school and then takes place over summer break.

CAROLINE:  Yeah it’s almost back to school already.  That is strange timing.

RYAN: It’s not a total loss though.  I think this will still play really well to the target audience.  I’m usually into family films but this one was just a little boring for me.

CAROLINE: Honey, believe me, I’m not judging.

RYAN: They family gets a dog at one point and it takes place during summer, thus the title.  It’s a cute option for kids but not really one for all ages like the best ranked family movies in my book.
