Diana Review
RYAN: I’ve been eagerly awaiting this film since I love, adore and miss Princess Diana so much and this biopic was actually released very briefly in November of 2013 in limited run with Oscar hopes but alas, it hasn’t garnered praise or respect. Now there doesn’t appear to be any other plans for distribution theatrically but it is available on Blu-Ray and DVD. I rented it on iTunes and liked it a lot.
CAROLINE: I was initially intrigued in this film as well. I’m glad to hear you liked it.
RYAN: I’m sure part of it stems from the fact I’m as enamored with Di as the next person but really the detailing of the production is exquisite. All the sets and the glimpse into how she lived was insightful and interesting. I also loved the hair, makeup and costumes. Naomi Watts really became her. I’m impressed but have thought of Naomi as one of the most underrated actors of her generation for some time now. She is brilliant.
CAROLINE: I usually like her too. Even on the poster, you can tell she got into the essence of Diana.
RYAN: She really nails the dialect and inflection of Diana; plus the chin down, timid eyes and demeanor were all so familiar. She’s portraying one of the most beloved and famous woman in history – had to be quite daunting.
CAROLINE: Yeah that’s always the task taking on a real person. But then again there is a wealth of footage to research and reference.
RYAN: This movie focuses on Diana’s last three years and the one criticism I have with the film is I wish it had encompassed more. It would have really underserved the last three years but I would like to see more of her life and experience adapted to the screen. Heck, I’d even take Diana – The Musical!
CAROLINE: (laughs) Settle down, honey. What about Naveen Andrews from TV’s LOST?
RYAN: He was great. He was the right casting choice and they have good chem – but there’s a lot depicted that is really sad. I mean, we know a lot of her life was astonishing and inspiring, but we also knew of the darkness and the struggle and almost bullying she received from both the royal family and paparazzi.
CAROLINE: It’s all very sad, remembering how that night went down. Her death is one of those moments in life that everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news.
RYAN: Its bittersweet. It’s great to see Diana and live with her again on screen for a couple hours, but sad to embrace the loss again and all the heartache she faced. I’m actually confused why this movie flew so under the radar. It’s well done and I enjoyed it. Whether you’re a fan of hers or just into historical film, this is a good option.
