CROSSING OVER
RYAN: The new movie “Crossing Over” opens in limited release this weekend and goes wider next weekend. It’s a very interesting and deep look into the immigration process in America, from both sides of the coin.
CAROLINE: And I’ve just fallen asleep.
RYAN: No. No. No. I just had to get the business out of the way. It’s an amazing film. It’s like “Babel” or “Crash”, both which were Best Picture nominees.
CAROLINE: And “Crash” won that year.
RYAN: Right. This is not as groundbreaking, but it is as dramatic and revealing. First off, it has a great screenplay, cinematography and score.
CAROLINE: I’m sorry I wasn’t able to attend the screening with you. So tell me more – are there several characters whose paths all end up crossing in some way?
RYAN: That does occur and there’s commentary about all different races and kinds of Americans. Let’s look at the cast here. You’ve got Harrison Ford who is just so good in everything he does, LBH, let’s be honest.
CAROLINE: How’s he looking?
RYAN: He’s fine. Whatever. But what the hell happened to Ray Liotta?
CAROLINE: What do you mean?
RYAN: He looks like Joan Rivers!
CAROLINE: [gasps’ No! What did he do to his face?
RYAN: I’m talkin’ eye lift, cheek implants, facelift and Botox such that Nicole Kidman dreams about.
CAROLINE: Oh, good God. Why?
RYAN: I swear! I vocally reacted when he had his first closeup. I think the people around me thought I was Cruise-azy. Ray has now joined the ranks of Sylvester Stallone and Mickey Rourke.
CAROLINE: That’s heinous.
RYAN: You said it.
CAROLINE: Who else is in it?
RYAN: There’s Ashley Judd. Whatever, she’s good; she bores me. There’s Jim Sturgess of “Across the Universe,” and he sings in this too, though it’s no musical. And then remember young Summer Bishil from “Towelhead” last year?
CAROLINE: Of course. She’s in this?
RYAN: Yes. And she is incredible. I expect great things from her.
CAROLINE: She is good beyond her years.
RYAN: Dakota Fanning must hate her.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ Anything else about the movie?
RYAN: It’s almost two hours and never lags.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: Think action, drama, suspense and then take a deep breath. It’s not going to get a Best Picture nomination but it is reminiscent of great films that did. It’s a very serious movie about a serious topic. If you’re in the mood for an adult drama, it’s great.
