COP OUT

RYAN: I don’t recall a time I’ve ever been more chagrined than when I walked out of the screening for Cop Out.

CAROLINE: Come on, it wasn’t that bad.

RYAN: Oh yes it was.

CAROLINE: I totally disagree. I thought it was funny in parts. Tracy Morgan is a riot.

RYAN: I am ashamed for all involved with this movie. It felt like it was shot in 1982 and held for release until now.

CAROLINE: Well, the director, Kevin “I’m Too Fat to Fly Coach” Smith says he modeled after the ’80s cop movies he grew up on. I think you’re way overreacting. It’s definitely a silly comedy and a true February release, but it’s got a great cast and some funny stuff. Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan had good chemistry.

RYAN: Ugh. I can maybe give you Tracy Morgan. The first five minutes were really funny; but after that, it was atrocious. I know they were going stylistically for the Beverly Hills Cop feel, but the score seriously sounded as cheesy as bad ’80s music. I felt like they needed Eddie Murphy to make it work.

CAROLINE: Maybe Eddie Murphy of yesteryear. The current Eddie Murphy can’t get a hit anymore.

RYAN: Whatever. This movie feels so dated.

CAROLINE: I don’t really see that. It’s just a cop buddy movie paying homage to ’80s cop movies. It totally made me laugh; though Tracy Morgan’s shtick starts to wear thin after a while. And it has tons of smaller roles with people you’ll recognize like Rashida Jones, Jason Lee, Michelle Trachtenberg and Adam Brody.

RYAN: The casting was good. Kevin Smith probably just called all his friends and asked them to be in it. I’m sure it was a lot of fun to make, but it didn’t translate for me.

CAROLINE: It starts off with such a bang, and it’s so freaking funny, that there’s kind of nowhere to go but down. It definitely started to sag a little after a half hour. But I was still entertained. It is what it is.

RYAN: The main bad guy is played by Guillermo Díaz, and it’s an interesting role for an openly gay actor. It’s a really butch, macho character, and he does a great job.

CAROLINE: It’s also got Seann William Scott as a bad guy.

RYAN: He’s now officially played the same role in every movie he’s ever been in. He’s always an annoying jackass.

CAROLINE: He’s a permanent goofball now, which is kind of funny for someone who’s so traditionally handsome.

RYAN: Yeah, why doesn’t he get the Bradley Cooper roles?

CAROLINE: Once he played Stifler, there was no going back.

— BOTTOM LINE —

CAROLINE: It’s a funny movie. I’m not gonna say you have to rush out and see it, but I’m sure Tracy Morgan fans will want to.

RYAN: It’s nice to see him break away from his 30 Rock character.

CAROLINE: He and Bruce Willis play off each other well, but it’s more of a rental in my eyes.

RYAN: I know it seems like I’m hating on this movie big-time, but I really didn’t like it. If you like dumb comedy, you’ll enjoy it.
