COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN’S HOPE

RYAN: I have to admit, I’ve been to a few Comic-Cons and always found them amusing and interesting.

CAROLINE: That sounds like a stretch of a compliment.

RYAN: I’ve enjoyed them.  I don’t know that I would pay to attend one, but I’ve been invited to cover them as press and it is quite a scene.

CAROLINE: I can only imagine.

RYAN: It’s the quintessential place to let your freak flag fly, so to speak.  All the comic book geeks and superhero nerds show up, many dressed like it’s Halloween.  But it’s in essence a way to connect fans with purveyors of that kind of stuff.

CAROLINE:  It seems a little bit like my worst nightmare, to be honest.  But how was this documentary?  Morgan Spurlock was a hit with Super Size Me.

RYAN: This flick is such a dud!

CAROLINE: Seriously?

RYAN: Yeah.  There just were not really any stakes.  It basically follows a couple fans before and during the annual event in San Diego.  I’ve not been to that one but have frequented the NY version.

CAROLINE: Were the people uninteresting?

RYAN:  They were but the docu just wasn’t very engaging and their stories didn’t really lead anywhere cinematic enough for me.  It’s really just a love letter to Comic-Con.

CAROLINE:  How annoying.  Anyone recognizable in it?

RYAN: There are tons.  Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, Stan Lee, Kevin Smith, Joss Whedon, Eli Roth, among others…

CAROLINE: Well that’s something.

RYAN:  Except they’re all just putting Comic-Con into perspective and validating it and taking it all too seriously.  I don’t mean to diss it because in my own way, I’m a geek too.  I play video games and I have my own obsessions like Harry Potter; but, this could have been so much more entertaining or funny.

CAROLINE: Yeah I’m kinda surprised.  Sounds like it’s just an earnest look into the convention.

RYAN: Totally.  I don’t even think fans of the event would enjoy this film.  Don’t waste your time.  Just go to a Comic-Con someday instead.
