BRÜNO
RYAN: Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest film offering is “Brüno” – and what else can I say other than he’s done it again!
CAROLINE: This movie has just as many shocks and laughs as “Borat,” though it wasn’t quite as funny overall. But just like with “Borat,” I can’t recall a movie that shocked me so much, made me scream out loud and whoop with laughter. Some of the images in this movie I’ve never seen before. And some are quite pornographic.
RYAN: I just love how original Sacha Cohen is. He’s a major talent and force in Hollywood. No one else does what he does, and he does it amazingly well. That he can make another movie like “Borat,” albeit with a very different character, and still shock us, is awesome.
CAROLINE: I find it hilarious that so many people haven’t seen “Da Ali G Show” and don’t know who he is. In this movie he deceives Paula Abdul, Ron Paul and evidently LaToya Jackson, though sadly they cut her scene out in the wake of MJ’s death. I sometimes wonder how he even gets himself out of some of the scenarios he gets into. He literally put his life in danger for this movie. It’s nuts!
RYAN: They must have had a lot of insurance on this film, that’s all I can say. There’s been a little controversy over this movie that it’s potentially damaging to the gay community, but I think it’s mostly just a really funny movie, and it makes the homophobes look bad, not the gays.
CAROLINE: It’s very much like “Borat” in that way. He’s turning the tables and making the rednecks and bigots look like idiots. I don’t even know where they found the trashy people in this movie. I think it was Alabama or Arkansas. And then two total L.A. bimbos. Regardless, it’s amazing to me that the producers could even get him into the scenarios they get him into.
RYAN: And how does he get all the people on screen to sign releases? Some faces were blurred out, but most weren’t.
CAROLINE: It’s truly incredible. He’s got huge balls. And the outfits he walks around in are beyond. He’s clearly not homophobic himself given that he practically has gay sex in this movie. I wonder how his GF and baby momma, Isla Fisher, feels about all this.
RYAN: I’m sure she’s feeling pretty good when the paychecks roll in. This movie made me laugh out loud more than almost any other movie I’ve seen. I even applauded a few times. I just can’t believe his audacity.
CAROLINE: Despite his silly wig, ridiculous outfits and full body wax in this movie, I still couldn’t help but think how hot he is.
RYAN: He’s so your type. I know it’s hard to take a short skit and stretch it into a long film, and there were definitely a few weak plot points. The secondary characters are fine, but not great. But it’s only about 80 minutes long, and it’s a great shock comedy as well as a social commentary. It’s really a must-see. And I’d say see it in the theater while it’s hot because everyone will be talking about it, and you don’t want to be left out.
CAROLINE: It’s a big buzz movie for sure, so if you’re inclined to check out the gorgeousness that is Sacha Baron Cohen on the big screen, you definitely should. Just prepare to be a little shocked and see lots of male anatomy.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: I think Sacha Cohen is a true genius and a remarkable talent. If he keeps this up and has more successful films and continues to shock and impress us, I can see him getting a lifetime achievement award someday. He’s just so original.
CAROLINE: Even though this movie didn’t have quite the same level of awesomeness as “Borat,” it’s still hilarious. We’ve just seen him do this genre before, so some of the shock has worn off a little bit. I love that he pushes the boundaries of what’s acceptable, and I’d imagine this movie will play better in the big cities than it does it middle America. Some people won’t even begin to get this movie; but that’s OK because it’s not for them. I’d recommend not watching the trailer or commercials so the jokes aren’t ruined for you. They have a much bigger impact when you don’t know what’s coming next.
RYAN: See this movie! All the cool kids will.
