BLADES OF GLORY

RYAN: A mere fraction of my figure skating fantasies were realized in this weekend’s #1 box office film, “Blades of Glory.”

CAROLINE: Why only a fraction, one wonders?

RYAN: Because the majority of my fantasies involve me actually being on the ice.

CAROLINE: Ah, indeed. I, on the other hand, do not enjoy ice skating at all. But I do like to watch it on TV; and that’s the main reason I wanted to see this film.

RYAN: One of the funniest parts of the movie is how they use special effects to show figure skating moves that aren’t even remotely possible.

CAROLINE: My favorite part was the initial demonstration of the Iron Lotus. I almost fell out of my chair. I think I laughed for an entire minute.

RYAN: That was hilarious, yes. And I loved how this film spoofed figure skating in a way we’ve never seen before. There’s so much room to make fun of everything – starting with the costumes.

CAROLINE: Yes, the Johnny Weir swan costume took a hit. And I loved how they had actual figure skaters and officials in the movie. Nancy Kerrigan, Scott Hamilton and a few others make cameos.

RYAN: Though he doesn’t get top billing, this film belongs to Jon Heder. He was brizilliant.

CAROLINE: I totally agree. He was so understatedly funny. He doesn’t have to go for the obvious nudity that Will Ferrell relies on in every film.

RYAN: As far as Will Ferrell films go, this is one of the better ones. But sadly, he had to pull out his predictable and tiresome shtick of nudity.

CAROLINE: Ugh, he’s so flabby. I’m over it. I think he’s funnier than that.

RYAN: Totally. But real-life couple Amy Poehler and Will Arnett are wonderful as a villainous brother and sister pairs team.

CAROLINE: I liked seeing Pam from “The Office” too. She plays their sister. Though I wasn’t sure how good she was.

RYAN: She was fine.

CAROLINE: She was merely fine, but I wanted her to be great.

RYAN: Well, for Jon Heder, they couldn’t have really used anyone prettier than her.

CAROLINE: True. His upper lip all but disappears when he smiles, and it’s gross.

RYAN: He has weird teeth too.

CAROLINE: Ew, no one has worse teeth than Will Ferrell. Have you looked?

RYAN: Yes. He makes me feel like I don’t need braces.

CAROLINE: His chest hair is revolting, I must say.

RYAN: I had to put the popcorn down when his shirt came off.

CAROLINE: Having said all that, it’s a pretty funny movie and there are several laugh-out-loud moments.

RYAN: Bottom line?

CAROLINE: It’s good, but not great. I would recommend it just because there isn’t much out there right now. But it’s not nearly as funny as “The 40 Year-Old Virgin.”

RYAN: Nothing’s funnier than that film. Howe’er, for a surprisingly good mix between smart comedy and lowbrow slapstick, “Blades of Glory” hits a home run. I felt good seeing it with my pal Kim, who laughed along with me. It’s definitely a movie to see with friends and larf.

CAROLINE: As opposed to seeing it with your enemies?

RYAN: Don’t be a wench.

Thanks For Viewing The BLADES OF GLORY
