Big Hero 6 Review
RYAN: It’s the latest feature from Disney and as the commercials note, “The studio that brought you Frozen.” And this turns out to be one of my favorite, nonmusical, animated movies ever! It’s so charming and there’s a moment toward the end I found really exhilarating too.
CHUCK: I’m your resident Disney fanatic so I come to this with very high expectations and this met and exceeded my expectations. It’s from the Marvel side of the Disney studios and it’s a brilliant way for Disney to get the younger audience into the Marvel side of things.
RYAN: I love the blending of world culture in this movie. The cast of characters is very diverse and race is sort of nonspecific. It takes place in San Fransokyo and it has a real whole-world feel to it which I enjoyed.
CHUCK: And nothing is made of it. It just is the world in this film.
RYAN: ANd it’s not just the people, but the fashion and the city itself.
CHUCK: The design is exquisite. Some of the flyover scenes are just breathtaking. This is really animation at its best. The details are a testament to the animators and designers who worked on this film.
RYAN: Interestingly, I realized, like a third of the way through, that this is a movie that could have been live action. For the first third, anyway, it plays very much just like a regular drama about people that happens to be animated. So many animated family films are about princesses or talking inanimate objects of some sort. But this is a regular drama that happens to be animated.
CHUCK: A lot of classic Disney movies do go dark early on and there are sacrifices that characters go through. There’s no sugar coating life. It’s not a bubblegum movie.
RYAN: And the best standard test I use for family films is whether it can engage and entertain all ages and this one 100% will. The adults will enjoy as much as the kids.
CHUCK: I agree. Everyone in your movie club really liked it. There was one kid behind me talking but then became increasingly silent because she was obviously just so into it.
RYAN: There’s a great balance between the cuteness and the creepiness factor in this film. So much cuteness to Baymax. He’s an adorable robot and so sweet and endearing – as much so as Wall-E or E.T.
CHUCK: I was totally thinking about Wall-E and how the filmmakers were able to create such emotion from a limited amount of physical expression with Baymax.
RYAN: There’s no one really famous in this but you don’t miss it.
CHUCK: The action sequences were amazing. I thought of The Incredibles. The superheroes are really unique.
RYAN: It becomes an Avengers type of movie that’s almost an add on after a great drama about family and morals and loss and revenge.
CHUCK: We have to mention the short that plays before the film – Feast. It was really cute.
RYAN: It’s my favorite short ever. It’s so sweet and if you’re a dog person, like I am, you will melt when you see it. You don’t have to be. It’s poignant.
CHUCK: It uses a new hybrid of computer and classic, hand-drawn animation which is keeping the classic animation alive, which is important to me. There’s so much warmth and texture.
RYAN: Big Hero 6 – this is one to enjoy on the big screen. I wanna own this one someday!
