BABY MAMA
RYAN: I was so excited to see “Baby Mama” because we love Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.
CAROLINE: I really wanted this movie to be good, and I was a little nervous because the trailer didn’t seem that great to me. But I’m happy to say that I really enjoyed it.
RYAN: I laughed out loud more times in this movie than I remember laughing in any movie lately.
CAROLINE: I think I laughed harder at “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”
RYAN: Ew, I so didn’t. I liked “Baby Mama” so much better. I love these two girls and their performances were both great. And I loved Steve Martin and his hair!
CAROLINE: His gray ponytail was fab, and we didn’t even know he was in the movie. They’re really pushing this as a big SNL movie, which it is. Look for cameos from Fred Armisen and Will Forte. But it’s also got a lot of other stars in it who aren’t even in the trailer.
RYAN: Hello Sigourney Weaver! She’s brilliant and not afraid to be self-deprecating.
CAROLINE: Greg Kinnear is in it too as Tina Fey’s love interest, and much like Robert Downey Jr., he’s aging like a fine wine. He’s looking fabulous.
RYAN: He looks better than ever!
CAROLINE: I’d also like to say, without giving anything away, that this movie isn’t exactly what you think it is based on the trailer. It’s got a few twists. It’s a comedy for sure, but there are some poignant and surprising moments too.
RYAN: Yes, but basically it’s a movie about surrogacy and wanting to have a baby. It’s a cute story, it’s well written and it’s expertly cast.
CAROLINE: I read somewhere that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler flipped a coin to see who should play which part. I don’t know if I believe that, but it definitely turned out the right way. Tina Fey has that buttoned up reputation with her glasses and slight uptightness. And Amy Poehler is tiny and wacky, so I think the casting worked very well physically.
RYAN: Definitely. I couldn’t even imagine it the other way around. And it’s a really good role for Amy Poehler because it shows she can actually act and not just be a comedian. Bottom line?
CAROLINE: It’s a very cute, funny movie, but I don’t think it’s a must-see in the theater. There are a few hilarious moments, but other moments are merely amusing. I definitely liked it, and I think you’d be thrilled to catch it on the plane some time or on cable. But I wouldn’t say you have to run out right now and see it on the big screen.
RYAN: I really liked it a lot. It’s not up there with a Judd Apatow film, but it’s a great comedy. I think people will enjoy it. The music is really good too.
CAROLINE: I love that Talking Heads song that opens the film. And I love, love, love the length of this movie! It’s a tight 95 minutes. It didn’t need to be any longer and it wasn’t. Judd Apatow could take a tip.
