Admission Review
RYAN: Admission is the new film with Tina Fey and Paul Rudd which is arguably a drama; random, considering these comedy heavyweights. That’s a little confusing with these stars.
KEVIN: I liked it a lot. I thought it was a fantastic movie and they had amazing chemistry. There was a nice balance of comedy with the drama.
RYAN: It’s about 25% comedic. It’s classified as a comedy but maybe it’s just not the typical low-comedy Hollywood’s been serving up for so long now. It’s smart comedy, if you will. It’s a real dramedy. It reminded me a bit of last year’s People Like Us with Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks.
KEVIN: I didn’t see that one.
RYAN: This was a little slow moving; dragged on a bit.
KEVIN: I didn’t really feel that way. I wasn’t bored at all. I thought it was very well written. I didn’t need a bunch of things popping out of the screen and blockbustering me during this one. It was a touching story that threw me for a lot of loops. It’s not predictable.
RYAN: I’ve never suggested only blockbusters are worth seeing and there are many, at that, which are themselves train wrecks. I love a great quiet movie, art film or character study. This one is pretty good, not great. Stand-out for me was Lily Tomlin who looks fantastic.
KEVIN: I thought she did too, until I saw a close-up. She looks a little bit like the Joker from Bat-Man.
RYAN: [laughs’ No way!
KEVIN: It’s reminiscent of Lily Tomlin.
RYAN: Ha. Considering some of her peers, she looks great. And I love Michael Sheen. I always forget he’s one of my favorite actors until he pops up in something. He plays Tina’s boyfriend and is, as usual, amazing. I love him.Gloria Reuben is also in it and some other recognizable faces. I primarily liked this for Paul Rudd. It’s more up his alley than Tina’s. I would have rather seen Jennifer Aniston in the role.
KEVIN: I really liked their chemistry. They’re both comedians so they improv well which makes it more believable to me. If it’s too dramatic, it can feel to straightforward, so I liked the bursts of comedy in it.
RYAN: There weren’t any LOL moments.
KEVIN: It was a very well balanced and well written script. All these little curve balls made it less formulaic.
RYAN: For not being a sex symbol in Hollywood, Tina Fey looked really good… great hair and makeup and wardrobe.
— BOTTOM LINE —
KEVIN: It’s entertaining and interesting. A great dramedy.
RYAN: I recommend it for a date night or if you’re into light drama. But it’s really not the kind of movie you have to run out to see in the theater.
