About Last Night Review
RYAN: This is a remake of the 1986 rom com starring Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, which I know I saw but barely remember because it was so long ago. But it’s all good because this movie felt fresh and has super high energy. It whips your attention and holds it. I loved this movie and its release has perfect timing, opening on Valentine’s Day.
CAROLINE: We do love a good rom com. I didn’t necessarily expect to hear you rave about a remake though. I remember the first one too. It’s part of those Brat Pack days.
RYAN: Totally. This movie is so funny and now. I LOL’d several times and there were other people in the audience at the screening who were lit’rally howling with laughter. I was, like, ok – this is a crowd-pleaser!
CAROLINE: Who was the funniest?
RYAN: Regina Hall and Kevin Hart. Honestly, these are roles of a lifetime for them! They both shine so brightly as these characters. Every scene they have together is just fireworks and hilarity. There’s a really great component to the script – much of the dialogue does a sort of he said/she said, intercutting between the guys and the girls – like the song Summer Lovin’ from Grease, only not in a song. Several scenes do it and it’s just brilliant every time.
CAROLINE: That sounds amazing. Is it very R rated?
RYAN: There’s some brief nudity adult language and a few sex scenes, so yes. But it’s an adult comedy. Honestly – it’s the most fun I’ve had so far this year at the theater, even more than The Lego Movie.
CAROLINE: (laughs) Well those are two very different target audiences.
RYAN: But they both have a sort of manic energy about them that is contagious. When you enjoy a movie, you walk out of it feeling a bit uplifted and this movie really does that.
CAROLINE: Ok honey.
RYAN: The chemistry between the cast is terrif; both the bromance, the sisterhood, friendships between the guys and the girls and then between the romantic connections – all palpable. It’s good casting and screenwriting. I wonder how much, if any, was improvised in the Regina/Kevin scenes. The costumes are also cool. There’s a great Halloween moment.
CAROLINE: Any key differences between this and the original?
RYAN: This one takes place in LA instead of Chicago. And it’s present day, so there’s technology; cell phones are worked into the story. There’s a bit of texting going on.
CAROLINE: That makes sense.
RYAN: Rom coms are on a role lately. This one follows a bit of the classic formula but when it’s done right, nothing’s really better. I’d totally run and see this movie again. If you’re into this genre or chick flicks, this one cannot disappoint.
