PITCH PERFECT
RYAN: I am so excited to be talking about this movie because it’s one of my favorite films in recent history. I freaking loved it!
KIM: I was a little hesitant going in, assuming it would be a young, high school/college vibe singing competition; cheesy. But it was brilliant. The writing was so witty and the performances were fabulous.
RYAN: It certainly has plenty of edge to it. I mean, let’s get real, there’s a cheese factor to anything of this nature but it’s the very best kind of cheesy and not really campy. It’s hysterical.
KIM: I totally laughed out loud.
RYAN: It’s like an episode of Glee on steroids. It’s Glee meets Bring it On.
KIM: …meets Mean Girls.
RYAN: It’s really for the girls and the gays. And basically if you don’t like Glee, you won’t like this movie.
KIM: I don’t know if you have to be into musicals to necessarily like this. Most everybody likes music. I’m always impressed by people who can pick out the right harmonies and sing like that.
RYAN: I’ve always been a fan of college a capella singing groups, so seeing a movie about that, along with such a comedic script and one of my favorite actors, is a total bonus. I love Anna Kendrick!
KIM: She’s fabulous. I was never into the Twilight series but loved her in Up in the Air.
RYAN: She was nominated for that.
KIM: And I loved her in this too.
RYAN: She’s been on my watch list since Camp, her first film; also a musical and even then she was a total scene stealer. And now I’m going to declare it – I’d like to see her cast as Elphaba in the film version of Wicked. That’s right. I said it.
KIM: [laughs’ I could see that. She has an odd sort of beauty to her. She’s not drop dead, but there’s something very attractive about her. Brittany Snow, I’m a big fan of. She’s adorable.
RYAN: It’s just remarkable how different she looks in this as a red head in this movie. She looks completely different. Almost less cute, but still a beautiful girl.
KIM: I like her better as a blonde or brunette. And Rebel Wilson was high-lar in this!
RYAN: I’d like to know how much of her dialogue was improvised. She’s a genius. This is her best performance to date. And the guys in the cast were great and super cute too; great voices.
KIM: Especially Skylar Astin. He came outta nowhere for me but I heard he was in Spring Awakening on Broadway.
RYAN: Shut up! I saw that with the original cast, Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, etc… That’s why he was so familiar to me! Crazy. His voice is waymazing.
KIM: There was one moment towards the end that was a bit predictable but it still had a lot of heart to it.
RYAN: Elizabeth Banks produced this and you can tell it was a labor of love for her. I love her in comedies and she and John Michael Higgins are such hams in this movie. I wanted more of them! I wish they’d had a number!
KIM: That would have been fun.
RYAN: It’s not a perfect movie in the sense that it drags a bit three quarters of the way through but aside from the pacing it really is one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in a movie theater. Sheer delight.
— BOTTOM LINE —
KIM: I don’t remember laughing out loud as much in recent memory. The writing was fab and I love the mashups. I can’t wait to get the soundtrack. It’s aca-amazing!
RYAN: [laughs’ That’s right. I’m just on the cusp of still being able to completely geek out over a movie like this. In another year, or two, it’ll just be creepy. But for now I’m still gonna go with the enthusiasm. I loved this movie completely. I will own this Blu Ray someday.
