Milwaukee Film Festival Picks

The Milwaukee Film Festival kicks off September 27 and runs through October 11.  And this year’s line up is outstanding.  Packed with movies abuzz from festivals around the world, like Sundance, Berlin, etc… There’s a terrific mix of feature length and short films; some by big names in Hollywood and others by local Milwaukee talent.

I’m looking forward to seeing as much as possible.  But among the 225 films, here are my picks of the 10 I’m most looking forward to this year:

  1. Quartet / Sunday October 7, 5pm, Oriental Theatre

·    The directorial debut of one Dustin Hoffman, stars Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, and features a dramatic story about a home for retired opera singers – expect some diva competition!

  1. No God No Master / Multiple Showings

·      Shot in Milwaukee with mostly local cast and crew, this movie is starring David Strathairn, and is a drama set in NYC 1919

  1. The Sessions / Sunday October 11, 7pm, Oriental Theatre

·      Oscar Buzz for both Helen Hunt as a sex surrogate and John Hawkes, portraying the true story of a man in an iron lung.

  1. The Jeffrey Dahmer Files / Multiple Showings

·      From Milwaukee native producer Jack Turner, you know this documentary will be riveting, based on the title alone.

  1. Gayby / Multiple Showings

·    He’s gay, she’s not… they’re BFFs and wanna have a baby… the old fashioned way.  Comedy.

  1. Compliance / Monday October 1

· Based on a truly crazy – and truly factual – story, this is one thriller not to miss.

  1. The Milwaukee Show / Thursday October 4
·       a compliation of short films from the Milwaukee area.

  1. Love Free or Die / Multiple Showings

·       Documentary about Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop.

  1. The Imposter / Multiple Showings

·      Doc about a boy who disappears in TX, discovered three years later in Spain.

  1. V/H/S / Friday September 28

·      Found footage horror movie – looks way better than any of the Paranormal Activity movies.
