KATY PERRY: PART OF ME
RYAN: This is the new documentary chronicling Katy Perry’s 2011 arena tour. She toured the entire year.
CAROLINE: So it’s basically her version of Truth or Dare.
RYAN: I couldn’t help but think of that too. It’s no Truth or Dare and she’s no Madonna but I did gain a lot more respect for her after seeing this film.
CAROLINE: Why’s that?
RYAN: It really delves into her past and how she became the huge pop icon she is today. She worked for it and struggled for it. And she writes her own stuff. You have to credit her for that.
CAROLINE: That’s cool. And this is in 3D?
RYAN: It is but only the concert performance scenes, which I thought there were not enough of. It’s mostly her story and her dealing with being out on the road for an entire year.
CAROLINE: How does she deal?
RYAN: Pretty well. There isn’t too much drama other than the break-up with Russell Brand.
CAROLINE: Oh really – they get into that?
RYAN: You do see him, minimally, and then it does follow the year through her divorce. She comments on it in interview but she’s still relatively guarded on the topic. I imagine she has to be. They obviously didn’t plan on that happening while filming all this behind the scenes footage.
CAROLINE: I always like to see what happens behind the scenes.
RYAN: It is cool seeing and hearing from her makeup guy, her assistant and her stylist. She has all those super fun costumes.
CAROLINE: Yeah her style is like Rainbow Brite. She’s over-the-top but you can still tell it’s her. She’s not as desperate for attention the way Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj seem to be with their styles.
RYAN: Exactly. I was also surprised to learn about how conservative her parents are. She’s grown quite a lot and is certainly an argument for rebellion.
CAROLINE: Yeah I’d heard a little about that when she first broke onto the scene with I Kissed a Girl.
RYAN: She seems like a cool gal but she’s not as dynamic in her performances as I wish she was. Maybe it’s because she can’t move too well in her costumes or she’s just not a great dancer. She’s not a great singer, either, LBH.
CAROLINE: True. But she does have some sparkle to her.
RYAN: That’s the thing. She has the it factor and it took her all the way. This is a look into a slice of her life last year. It’s colorful and entertaining, insightful and sweet; but unless you’re a major KP fan, it’s not a must see.
