RYAN: This movie is hilarious! I was looking forward to it so my expectations were pretty high and yet this film still managed to surprise me.
CAROLINE: It must be a challenge for a man who’s accustomed to writing 30 minute scripts for TV to do a full length feature.
RYAN: But Seth MacFarlane – c’mon. He’s just brilliant. I’ve always thought so and now it’s confirmed.
CAROLINE: I like a good comedy but this looks like it’s such a boy movie!
RYAN: The elements in this film typically associated with boy-movie-humor, that normally find incredibly off-putting, were actually funny here.
CAROLINE: Ok… drinking the Kool-Aid?
RYAN: Not at all. This movie is just so fresh and original. It’s very true to Seth’s comedic sensibility – he wrote it, directs and stars as the voice of the living teddy bear.
CAROLINE: How are Mark and Mila?
RYAN: They’re both great. I’m sort of biased toward Mila Kunis lately since she’s playing the Witch of the East in the upcoming Oz, The Great and Powerful movie but she’s very natural in this role and really grounds the film. And more often than not, Mark chooses good scripts. He’s perf in this role. It’s so Boston.
CAROLINE: I usually enjoy both of them.
RYAN: And the CGI is really great. Much of this movie hinges on how suspended your disbelief is and the story becomes really compelling.
CAROLINE: How much did you LOL?
RYAN: A lot. This is my favorite comedy since The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
CAROLINE: Stop.
RYAN: Seriously. I really loved it. It’s hysterical; with some suspense, action, romantic drama and that whole twist of fantasy. The first fifteen minutes of the film are almost like a fairy tale and it slayed me.
CAROLINE: How raunchy is it though?
RYAN: Oh completely. It’s is so rated R. But in the ways that other recent films go for the over the top or non-PC humor, this does in a fresh way that seems to come from an almost more intellectual approach. Seth is more creative in going for the laughs and I just appreciate that so much more than the lame Adam Sandler type of shtick.
CAROLINE: I do too. Now I really wanna see this.
RYAN: You have to. There are also some great cameos and the music is so effective in this.
CAROLINE: Well Seth is very musical. He put out a CD of showtunes and standards once, didn’t he?
CAROLINE: Well Seth is very musical. He put out a CD of showtunes and standards once, didn’t he?
RYAN: Totally and I love it in Family Guy when he does musical numbers and it’s used to the same effect here. This movie is brilliant.
CAROLINE: Sometimes I feel like you throw that word around.
RYAN: I do use it frequently for color. I actually mean it here.
CAROLINE: Ok. I believe you.
RYAN: I hope this is the first of many more films from him. Ultimately it comes down to whether you enjoy TV’s Family Guy and that type of humor. If you do, you’ll love this movie as much as I do.
