YOUR SISTER’S SISTER
CAROLINE: I think we’ve entered bizarre-o world; there’s a new movie out that I’ve seen but you haven’t, Your Sister’s Sister.
RYAN: Seriously bizarre-o! But it’s only out in limited release and you attended an NYC screening whilst I’m in Chicago. Should I try to check it out m’self?
CAROLINE: Nah, you can wait to catch it on cable or rent it. But it’s a fun, very small movie starring two people we like, Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt.
RYAN: You know I adore Ms. Blunt. What’s the premise?
CAROLINE: Basically a dude who’s mourning his brother’s death goes out to a friend’s family cabin for some alone time; but he bumps into his friend’s sister, who’s also staying there after a break-up. Of course, antics ensue.
RYAN: So who plays the dude?
CAROLINE: This guy Mark Duplass, who’s also a director. He got started with that whole mumblecore thing, and he directed Jeff, Who Lives at Home, which I’m sure you remember from earlier this year.
RYAN: Of course! I dug that movie.
CAROLINE: He’s good, but not quite as cute as you want him to be. There’s something appealing about him though.
RYAN: I assume the acting is great?
CAROLINE: Yes, very natural. Like I said, it’s a tiny movie; I’m sure the budge was microscopic. It mostly takes place at the cabin and it’s basically just about the relationship between the three main characters over the course of a long weekend.
RYAN: Was it boring?
CAROLINE: No, I was never bored. I didn’t adore it, but I certainly enjoyed it. You definitely get caught up in the story and feel like you know these people and want to help them with their problems.
RYAN: Sounds very indie.
CAROLINE: Totally, but in a good way. It’s from the same director who did Humpday, which I really want to see but haven’t yet. But just to give an example, I rented Our Idiot Brother recently, with Paul Rudd, Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banks, etc and liked that a lot more than Your Sister’s Sister. It was more of a comedy, but it has that indie vibe too.
RYAN: So maybe I’ll rent Our Idiot Brother and skip this one.
CAROLINE: Ha. This movie definitely isn’t a must see on the big screen, but if you like any of the actors, you’ll enjoy it. It’s got a good story, great acting and all the qualities of a good indie. But the ending is a bit of a cheat, which sort of irritated me. It’s a bit of a groaner, though I have my thoughts on what the outcome was.
RYAN: Hmm, now I’m intrigued. Maybe I’ll check it out on cable someday to show my support for Mrs. John Krasinski!
