PROMETHEUS
RYAN: There’s been much hype, speculation and anticipation for the new Ridley Scott Alien movie – is it a prequel? Can he do it again? etc… and I’m happy to report: Yes and Yes!
CAROLINE: Really? The first Alien is a classic. How does this compare?
RYAN: This movie is just riveting. It’s so freaking engaging that it almost makes a word like riveting feel overused in any other context. This movie is masterful filmmaking.
CAROLINE: Rave, why don’t you?
RYAN: I will. It deserves it. It’s shot in 3D and the look is astonishing… from the opening credits to every environment, it’s almost like a new Star Wars but more of a thriller and a lot more steeped in humanity.
CAROLINE: How so?
RYAN: A lot of the themes in the film deal with spirituality and relationships and duality/nonduality. It’s very, very interesting and raises issues that would be fun to talk about with friends after seeing.
CAROLINE: Was it really suspenseful?
RYAN: Yes there are certainly edge of your seat moments and the sci-fi world and story is just incredible. They really created something special with this movie. I didn’t want it to end and it’s a full two hours. You can tell in every frame of this film how passionately Ridley Scott wanted to revisit this material.
CAROLINE: How’s the cast, specifically Noomi, the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?
RYAN: She’s excellent. The whole cast is. This is her movie and she carries it. Charlize is, of course, fantastic and looks degorgeous. And Michael Fassbender is terrif as the robot. He has some really great moments acting just this side of human.
CAROLINE: Any full frontal?
RYAN: [laughs’ Uh, no. This isn’t Shame. Logan Marshall-Green is really a standout. He’s done a lot before this film but this role will really define him as an actor.
CAROLINE: How are the effects?
RYAN: They’re brilliant. So much of this movie is in the mood, tone and design. And the effects are almost understated but then really deliver on every level when necessary. All the spacecrafts and aliens and goo are just waymazing.
CAROLINE: It’s interesting to do a prequel like this because if it’s a super-hit, you’d think the studio would want to do a sequel to it. Would that be possible?
RYAN: I think so. I definitely want more to this story. It really tells a crazy origin tale for the Alien series.
CAROLINE: Is it too scary for me, do you think?
RYAN: Not for you but would be for kids, thus the R-rating. The arc is about as good as it gets in a film. It looks exquisite and the performances are great. It’s just a genius film.
