MOONRISE KINGDOM

RYAN: This is the new movie from Wes Anderson and you know, I’m not a big fan of his.
CAROLINE: I’m not either.  It’s like he’s in his own little world making little art movies which is all fine and good but they don’t really speak to me.  I find them more awkward than entertaining.
RYAN: Me too.  His sensibility is quirky and peculiar.  And I pretty much find his stuff very drawn out and boring.
CAROLINE: So how was this one?
RYAN: I actually like this one the best among his films, which in general, I don’t like.  So I feel a little mixed on this but it still didn’t really appeal to me.  Though it wasn’t a waste of time like some of his previous work.
CAROLINE: He always seems to get a good cast.
RYAN: I love Edward Norton though he doesn’t steal the show here.  The kids in the movie are okay but sort of wooden.  Bruce Willis was good.  And the rest of the cast is good too: Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, etc…
CAROLINE: Was it funny?
RYAN: It has its moments and the audience at the press screening really seemed to respond to it.
CAROLINE: His stuff is just often so odd.
RYAN: Some of the shots were very creative and obviously well story-boarded.  And he must have a thing for yellow.  It’s everywhere in the movie.  There’s a very 60’s-Mod look to the whole thing, again, and it has almost a timeless, storybook quality to it.  It takes place on a random island so it kinda worked.
CAROLINE: Sounds interesting.
RYAN: But for all of that, I still didn’t LOL at the humor.  There’s some excitement toward the end of the film which I found a bit more engaging.
CAROLINE: So what’s your bottom line with this one?
RYAN: I’m just and a fan of Wes’s sensibility as a writer and director.  It’s a rental at best but not really on my list to recommend.
