THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT

RYAN: I’m happy to report I went into this film with relatively high expectations because, one, I like the cast and two, it’s a comedy produced by Judd Apatow and his sensibility hardly ever disappoints.
CAROLINE: I love a rom com and Judd but I’m not that big on Emily Blunt.  I don’t think she’s funny.

RYAN: OMG I love her.  And if I recall correctly, you found her quite amusing in The Devil Wears Prada.
CAROLINE: She was great in that movie.
RYAN: She was Golden Globe nominated.  I like her a lot and she’s fantastic and very funny in this movie.  The whole cast is.  I’m gonna go ahead and compare it to Bridesmaids in the sense that it’s a comedy with a dose of melancholy thrown in for good measure.
CAROLINE: That’s a bold comparison.
RYAN: I’m not necessarily saying it’s one of the year’s best films but in tone and originality, it’s winning.
CAROLINE: Fair enough.  How’s Jason Segel’s and Em’s chemistry?
RYAN: So palpable.  They’re good friends in real life and he wrote the script with her in mind.  They are both so freaking good in this – and the supporting cast is just brilliant.  I actually LOL’d more in this movie than I can remember laughing in any film in a long time.
CAROLINE: Wow.  That’s cool.

RYAN: Chris Pratt, Alison Brie and Jacki Weaver and Rhys Ifans are all just so good.  It’s a terrific script with a brilliant cast.  Look, I’m raving.
CAROLINE: You are!  I’m a bit surprised.  I definitely want to see this but never expected this much from it.
RYAN: I’m so disappointed, in general, by romantic comedies of the last six years or so.  They’re just so formulaic and predictable.  It’s not that this one breaks the mold, per se, but it does seem amazingly original.
CAROLINE: That is an accomplishment.
RYAN: I really loved this.  It’s a great, R-rated rom com.  It’s a little risque and dirty in its humor, but we’re all adults in the audience.  It’s funny and poignant and just overall very entertaining.
