THE RAVEN

RYAN: It’s so nice to see John Cusack back on the big screen.  I feel like he’s always been underrated.

CAROLINE: I’d agree with that.  He makes good choices though; I like most of his work.  I was interested in seeing this but missed the screening.  How was it?

RYAN: It’s good.  It’s a bit of a slow burn but a very interesting story.  It’s a mystery/psych thriller, looking for a serial killer who is whacking folks based on Edgar Allan Poe’s writing.

CAROLINE: And John plays Poe.

RYAN: Correct.  And Poe’s work was some freaky stuff so a lot of the inspiration behind and story in this film is frightening and gory.

CAROLINE: I don’t really like gore.

RYAN:  Nor do I but it’s kind of necessary here.  And it’s not, like, a slasher film; though a couple scenes almost get close.  There’s a Jack the Ripper, Sweeney Todd and American Psycho sense to this.

CAROLINE: Ew.

RYAN:  Yeah intense.  It’s actually like a Silence of the Lambs period piece but ultimately not that good.  This won’t be getting any Oscar noms.

CAROLINE:  I’d imagine not.

RYAN:  But the story is similar. The investigator in this film enlists the twisted mind of Poe to help like how Clarice went to Lector.

CAROLINE:  I see.  That works as a story device.

RYAN:  It is dark and creepy but not as quick as I’d have liked.  Still I love mystery and trying to figure out who dunnit.  I miss TV’s Murder She Wrote.

CAROLINE:  [laughs’ Honey, stay focused.

RYAN: Ok ok.  The script is good.  I also liked the supporting cast – Alice Eve and Brendan Gleeson.

CAROLINE: I like them too.

RYAN: It’s good but not the one to see this weekend.  Still it’s worth seeing.  The climax was super engaging and interesting.  I was, like, glued to the screen.
