THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS
RYAN: I’m so excited to introduce my 11-year-old niece, Gaby, as a junior film critic. I’ve been watching movies and talking about them with her since birth. And since I was in LA for a red carpet earlier this week when this movie screened, and it’s a kids’ film, I thought she’d do the review justice. So how was it, honey?
GABY: Um, I thought at the beginning of the movie it wasn’t very good but when it got to the middle, it was much better.
RYAN: So it takes a while to get into. What’s it about?
GABY: It’s about a pirate who, along with his crew, is trying to win this Pirate of the Year award and they go through all these adventures and stuff. And he finds out along the way something very interesting about his parrot. They end up meeting a monkey and a scientist and having an adventure.
RYAN: I love an adventure. How did you like it, or not like it?
GABY: It was funny and exciting. I liked it.
RYAN: How were the voices?
GABY: They were good. It was Hugh Grant and Salma Hayek, among others. Captain Pirate was very funny. And it’s claymation and it looked very descriptive. Some characters look very funny.
GABY: My friends would like it. I don’t think it’s for little, little kids but it is for adults because my dad went with me and he really liked it a lot.
RYAN: Any stand-out moments in the film?
GABY: Yes. There were three songs in the background. Like when something wasn’t right, a sad song came up; but it was also kind of funny. There was one song, like, “I’m not crying, I’m just cuttin’ onions.”
RYAN: Was someone singing?
RYAN: Anything else you’d like to share about the movie?
GABY: When I was watching, I was laughing and it was pretty suspenseful in a fun way. I liked the ending too. But I’d recommend waiting to see it on DVD because the first half hour wasn’t very good and I don’t think it’s worth it till the middle and the end.
RYAN: Good job!
