AMERICAN REUNION
RYAN: It’s number 4 in the franchise and frankly, I thought numbers 2 and 3 were forgettable.
CAROLINE: I’m not the biggest fan either so I skipped this new one. How was it?
RYAN: It has some moments. The first ten minutes are pretty good and it was cool seeing each person make an entrance in the film but then after that, it’s a very average, cliche´ movie that takes forever to get to the reunion.
CAROLINE: So no Romy and Michelle, is it?
RYAN: Not at all. That’s a way better movie. I think this would have worked better as a short film.
CAROLINE: Oh God. Is it too long?
RYAN: Not too long but they certainly could have condensed, considering the best parts were just seeing the actors together again… and then anything with Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge was good.
CAROLINE: Love them.
RYAN: I swear. Jennifer doesn’t even need to talk. She can just purse her lips and I’m on the floor. She’s genius.
CAROLINE: Yeah they’re both gifted comedians.
RYAN: I do have to warn that there is a full frontal Jason Biggs moment that’s pretty random. I think if you’re working with what he’s got to work with, you should maybe think twice before going full frontal. He’s no Michael Fassbender, if you know what I’m saying.
CAROLINE: Do I ever! So how does everyone look? Is there a lot of Botox going on?
RYAN: A bit but nothing seriously offensive. In one scene Mena looked like she might have had the shadow of a light mustache. But if they had to do a reunion, now was the time to do it. Maybe they’ll wait a couple decades and do American Retirement.
CAROLINE: [laughs’ Nothing would surprise me.
RYAN: I’m not a big fan of this brand of humor – the sexually charged, toilet jokes, and the pandering to the 18-year-old boy audience. It’s very Harold and Kumar and actually by a director from that franchise.
CAROLINE: Yeah, I’m out.
RYAN: There is the familiarity factor at play here but my pal Brad put it best, it’s really just, like, a spoof of American Pie. It’s not worth seeing in the theater… if you must, just catch it on TV someday.
