W.E.

RYAN: I’m very impressed with this film considering it’s directed by Madonnna, who isn’t really popular among movie-going audiences.

CAROLINE: Well acting and directing are two very different skill sets.

RYAN: And she really proves herself as a director here. She also co-wrote the script with Alek Keshishian, the man who directed her phenomenal documentary Truth or Dare.

CAROLINE: God I love that movie! So tell me about W.E.

RYAN: It’s very dramatic and stylish. The costumes and score, soundtrack, are all really fantastic and you should expect that of something Madonna puts her stamp on. You can tell she really cared about those aspects.

CAROLINE: I care about those things too. How was the casting?

RYAN: Excellent. Abbie Cornish plays a modern day New Yorker obsessed with Wallis Simpson and the film goes back and forth in time between the two ladies.

CAROLINE: That’s interesting. I like Abbie. And the gal who plays Wallis is getting a lot of attention for this role, almost breakthrough for her.

RYAN: I do have to forewarn, though, there is one scene that is literally quite brutal… about domestic violence; and I was surprised how intense it was, for those who’d like to know…

CAROLINE: GTK, good to know indeed. And the credits features the song she won the Golden Globe for, correct?

RYAN: Yeah, Masterpiece. And I’m really diggin’ it. It reminds me a bit of the track she did for that movie With Honors.

CAROLINE: I’ll Remember! That was a good song.

RYAN: She’s certainly out and about doing a lot of press for this movie and it opens nationwide this weekend. It’s up for one Oscar, for costume design, and that is deserving. I also think it’s a really great telling of a very interesting time in History.

CAROLINE: There are so many movies I still want to see I can’t say this is on the top of my list but I’m glad to hear you liked it. And I’m happy for Madge.

RYAN: Me too. I hope she directs more like this. It’s a very strong film with a strong perspective. It’s very effective and engaging filmmaking and storytelling. If you’re in the mood for a non-Mia Wasikowska period piece, check it out.
