THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 1
RYAN: The hotly anticipated new Twilight movie is in theaters as of midnight last night, and I’m happy to say we’ve both seen it!
CAROLINE: Honey, this was not to be missed! To me, this franchise is so bad it’s good. You can’t help but get swept up in the Cullens’ world. I’ve never read the books and I don’t really care about these characters, but there’s something that transports you when you’re watching these movies. It makes me feel like a teenager again.
RYAN: The Twilight people took a tip from the Harry Potter team and have divided the final book into two movies. So we’ll be getting the second installment of Breaking Dawn next year.
CAROLINE: Let’s just start by saying the Cullens’ wigs are as atrocious as ever.
RYAN: And the makeup! But at least they’re consistent. I mean, if vampires were real, we’d be able to spot them if they walked the earth looking like they do in these films. Please.
CAROLINE: At the risk of sounding lame, this movie scared me a little bit. Some of the werewolf scenes are totally freaky. I can’t imagine ‘tweens wouldn’t be scared out of their minds.
RYAN: I didn’t find them scary. I actually thought they were funny; like, they talk through telepathy and I was annoyed you didn’t see their mouths moving. But the CGI is good.
CAROLINE: The birth scene wasn’t as bad as I’d heard though. I think it was much gorier in the book.
RYAN: I heard the same and was actually really looking forward to that and I’m very disappointed they seemed to have copped out on us. It just looked like Edward chewed it out of her or something.
CAROLINE: These are not great movies by any means. You go because you enjoy the characters, but usually the dialogue is laughable. In fact, people did LOL a few times at some of the lines… and believe me, they weren’t meant to be funny.
RYAN: I was rather bored for the bulk of the film. It really didn’t need to be split into two parts. There was very little story or action in this installment, comparatively, and they could have condensed this into 45 minutes and then resolved with whatever occurs in Part 2. I think Breaking Dawn as even a two and a half hour, complete film would have been better than these two parts. That being said, I have no idea what Part 2 is all about.
CAROLINE: I got kind of bored with Bella just lying around pregnant for most of the movie. They did some cool CGI to make Kristen Stewart look emaciated though. And the wedding scene was fun. I read in the paper that they’re anticipating the demand for Bella’s wedding dress is going to be so huge that they’ve already got the knock-off version ready to sell 3 days after the movie comes out. It’s gonna be $800.
RYAN: Did you like the dress?
CAROLINE: Yeah, I thought it was pretty. It wasn’t what I expected. I liked that it wasn’t strapless, and of course, K. Stew looked gorge in it. The back is particularly va-va-voom.
RYAN: I think it was awkwardly tailored around the bosom region but was otherwise tasteful.
CAROLINE: Without giving anything away for those who haven’t read the books, I LOVED the ending. I don’t know how I didn’t see it coming, but I totally didn’t, and it made me gasp. LOVED it!!
RYAN: Oh I had heard about what happens but didn’t care ahead of time since this isn’t gospel like Harry Potter is to me. Still the ending is perfect.
— BOTTOM LINE —
CAROLINE: You don’t need to see this movie unless you’re a fan of the franchise. You all know who you are, and you probably already saw the movie last night at midnight and will see it again 3 more times this weekend. I’m totally glad I saw it but am certainly aware of its flaws – weak dialogue, questionable acting, bad wigs, etc. But I still totally enjoyed myself and got caught up in the whole vampire world. I will reiterate that I’m Team Edward all the way.
RYAN: This franchise has not and generally does not capture me the way Harry Potter does; but, it’s so relevant in terms of pop culture, I cannot help but care a little. Kristen Stewart still annoys me in this role and I think we all could have used a lot more Taylor Lautner hotness but we’ll see what we get in Part 2. In the end, I reluctantly find myself looking forward to it.
