WAITRESS
RYAN: Ma’am, I’d like a slice of the “Bad Baby” pie.
CAROLINE: How about the “I Hate My Husband Earl” pie? I’m surprised to say it, but “Waitress” – j’adore!
RYAN: Keri Russell is so good in this adorable romantic dramedy. This needs to be a sleeper hit!
CAROLINE: I don’t know how much play it’s getting outside of the big cities, but what a treat this movie is – literally and figuratively.
RYAN: It’s expertly cast with Keri Russell as the lead, Jenna. And Cheryl Hines and Adrienne Shelly as her co-waitresses are fabulous.
CAROLINE: Of course, Adrienne wrote and directed the film as well, but she is sadly now deceased. Her movie is such a delight, I don’t even have words. When I first saw the trailer for this, I was a little annoyed by Felicity’s Southern accent and I didn’t think I was gonna like it. But the second the movie started, I was hooked and it just got better and better as it went along.
RYAN: There were actually several times during the movie where we turned to each other with surprise and glee at how much we were enjoying the film.
CAROLINE: There’s a great love story. And Felicity’s husband is played well by Jeremy Sisto of “Clueless” and “Six Feet Under” fame. He’s very good at being a complete asshole.
RYAN: Whether you like cooking shows or not, every scene where Keri Russell is baking a pie is to die for.
CAROLINE: I think they used a hand double because I’m not sure that Felicity is that adept in a kitchen. But there’s just so much to enjoy in this movie that I almost don’t want to say anymore so I don’t spoil it for you.
RYAN: The actor who plays Keri’s doctor in the film is formerly of “One Life to Live.”
CAROLINE: Ooh, is he cute! He provides the romance in the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed every scene he was in.
RYAN: The costumes are great too. And there’s really good camera work; lots of shots where they spin around and it’s just one of those movies where every detail is very well done. And unlike other films that are great but have a bad ending, this film has just about the most perfect ending I’ve ever seen.
CAROLINE: It’s a fairy-tale ending for sure. I kind of saw it coming a mile away but it didn’t bother me. And it was nice to see Cheryl Hines in a decent movie for once. Bottom line?
RYAN: I absolutely recommend this film. You don’t have to see it on the big screen, but it deserves to be the breakout hit of the year and get a lot of great buzz. I don’t know about you, but I’m on my way to get some pie right now.
CAROLINE: This movie was at Sundance and obviously it did well because it’s being distributed. So kudos to Adrienne Shelly. She will be missed.
RYAN: May she rest in peace.
