LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE

CAROLINE: You know I have an aversion to animated films so I’ll let you go ahead and review this one.

RYAN: Yes. It’s best you keep your biased opinion to yourself [laughs’.

CAROLINE: I just get bored after an hour. This one is about owls and features the voices of Geoffrey Rush, Helen Mirren and who else?

RYAN: Abbie Cornish, Jim Sturgess and Richard Roxburgh who we loved as The Duke in Moulin Rouge!

CAROLINE: Love him! And I loved Jim in Across the Universe.

RYAN: I worked with him last year at MTV and he’s a super cool guy. Listen – this movie is no Toy Story. But it’s a solid film for kids.

CAROLINE: How’s the 3D?

RYAN: Pretty good. I mean, the film is gorgeous! The owls look real. Aside from the fact they’re talking, they actually look real. Their feathers and the way they move and fly is really so incredible and beautiful.

CAROLINE: Owls. I’m over it. What’s up with this whole Ga’Hoole business?

RYAN: [laughs’ It’s a place, like a tree or something where the protector, or guardian owls live. Basically this is a war movie between good and bad owls.

CAROLINE: And you hate war movies.

RYAN: It’s true that is my least favorite genre. But I think cause this one is based on a book which is a children’s adventure and there’s sibling rivalry and a dash of fantasy; the fight to save the good and find your way back home… those themes I get into.

— BOTTOM LINE —

RYAN: Ultimately it’s sort of a boy movie for kids. It’s violent in parts but also cute. Some of the owls are truly adorable and others are mean and cruel. There isn’t any blood but there is hardcore owl fighting. Still it’s a very well made movie.
