THE LAST EXORCISM

RYAN: I was really looking forward to getting scared during this movie because the trailer looks creepy and the poster is borderline terrifying.

CAROLINE: Tell me that actress is a contortionist.

RYAN: [laughs’ I think it’s effects but the girl does snap pretty well between innocence and devil-child.

CAROLINE: Is this just another attempt at recapturing some of the crazy-terror of The Exorcist?

RYAN: Maybe at the core of it but the premise is sort of cool. It’s, like, a documentary of a priest who admits he’s a phony exorcist and wants to illustrate that by performing one last exorcism. He shows how he fakes it all but in this case the girl might actually be possessed.

CAROLINE: It looks absolutely nightmare-inducing.

RYAN: Although some of it is derivative of Blair Witch Project and even last year’s hit Paranormal Activity, I still left rather frightened. But not completely. It’s only PG-13 and I wish it had been rated R – then I really might have had nightmares.

CAROLINE: Why anyone would want that I’ll never know.

RYAN: But I wish you had screened it with me because I need to talk out the ending. I’m confused by it. And I don’t get confused in movies, you know?

CAROLINE: Yeah you’re pretty good. I, on the other hand, often am confused.

RYAN: I don’t want to give anything away but it’s the kind of ending that could imply two different things so I need to compare thoughts with someone.

CAROLINE: That’s fair and I do enjoy that after provocative films; but I’m still glad I didn’t see this one. How was the cast?

RYAN: I loved the lead guy who plays the priest. He’s kinda cute and likeable so you root for and identify with him but there’s also something icky about him. He’s been on TV’s Big Love and other things.

CAROLINE: Who’s the girl?

RYAN: Ashley Bell – I don’t know much about her but she’s been on Showtime’s The United States of Tara. And the guys who play her dad and brother are creepy.

CAROLINE: Ew. I don’t even want to know.

RYAN: It’s a little gory in some bits and there’s some implied violence toward small animals.

CAROLINE: That’s never appreciated.

— BOTTOM LINE —

RYAN: This is no major breakthrough nor the definitive film on exorcism, but for only 90 minutes, it’s fun. I actually felt freaked after seeing it.
