THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
CAROLINE: One of my most anticipated movies of the summer is The Kids Are All Right, which opens in limited release tomorrow. It was a huge hit at Sundance and we’ve been hearing about it ever since. And look at this cast!
RYAN: I love everyone involved – Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska. I so wish I’d been able to attend the screening with you. How was Annette B?
CAROLINE: She is having a banner year between this and Mother and Child. I have a new found Meryl Streep-esque appreciation for her.
RYAN: She’s an amazing talent. Maybe 2011 will be her year to win an Oscar.
CAROLINE: She’s been nominated three times and a lot of people think she’ll get her fourth nom this year. But I think it might be for Mother and Child over this one. And Mark Ruffalo is so hot that I don’t even have words to describe him.
RYAN: You’ve always had your nerdy cute on for him.
CAROLINE: I love him. He’s an amazing actor, and if you look him up on IMDB, you’ll see how many great movies he’s been in. He makes really good choices.
RYAN: The trailer has a very indie look to it. Is that the vibe of the movie or is it more blockbuster?
CAROLINE: Oh no, it’s totally indie. It’s a very small movie and because of all the buzz, I went in with high expectations that I probably shouldn’t have. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked it; but it’s definitely a small, quiet movie. You can see why it would stand out at Sundance, but don’t expect anything huge and life-changing.
RYAN: Did it remind you of a Catherine Keener type film?
CAROLINE: Totally. It’s got that vibe. It’s from the same director as Laurel Canyon, which we loved. I know you would like it especially because it’s about a gay couple.
RYAN: Honey, you know I’m dying to see it! How’s Alice in Wonderland?
CAROLINE: She’s very good. She has really long, stringy hair with dead ends that I wanted to cut off though. All of the acting was great; there’s not a weak link to be found. And I appreciate that it’s a portrayal of a non-traditional family in a very traditional, normal way. It’s just the ins and outs of their life; until things get shaken up when the kids meet their sperm donor/biological dad. Then things get a little nutty.
RYAN: I love the story line. It’s so unique for a movie, and yet not unusual for so many people in their real lives.
CAROLINE: Exactly. I love that it portrays life so realistically. And it’s hysterically funny at times, but also very moving.
RYAN: Did you weep?
CAROLINE: Honey, please. Is the pope Catholic?
— BOTTOM LINE —
CAROLINE: I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and would recommend it for anyone who’s into smaller, indie films. Great casting, great story and great acting. It made me both laugh and cry and it’s a great commentary on marriage and relationships. Everyone’s going to be talking about it this summer, so get out and see it. Another winner from director Lisa Cholodenko!!
