SEX AND THE CITY 2
RYAN: What’s even cooler than Sex and the City 2 finally coming out is the fact that we’ve seen it twice already.
CAROLINE: I do feel a little fancy right now. And I must say I loved the movie just as much the second time around, if not more.
RYAN: The first thing I noticed about the movie is that dark lipstick is going to be huge this summer!
CAROLINE: Seriously? That’s the first thing you noticed? Not “Oh my God, it’s great to see the girls again and I love Carrie’s outfit”? Or “I’m so happy the sequel is finally here”?
RYAN: I’m just saying, they’re all rocking the dark lipstick in the first couple scenes. But it does definitely feel like seeing old friends again. And what could be more exciting for me than Liza Minnelli’s cameo happening right at the beginning of the movie?! It was such a decadent scene and so extravagant. I loved every second of it and loved having it happen so early in the film.
CAROLINE: The opening is really fun; the only thing that bothered me is that some of the dialogue seemed a little stilted. But I got over it quickly because everything else was so much fun. I was so happy to see the girls again!
RYAN: I love how Michael Patrick King doesn’t pick up right where the last movie left off, but plays it in real time so it’s two years later. That way we can see what’s changed with the girls since the last movie. I’d say that Charlotte and Miranda’s plot lines are a little thin, Samantha is hilarious, and in the end, it’s really about Carrie.
CAROLINE: I feel like that’s how it’s always been, at least at the end of the series and certainly in the first movie. Carrie is dealing with her Big relationship, and Charlotte and Miranda always get stuck with the motherhood and career plot lines, respectively. Then Samantha’s there to talk about sex and be bawdy and outrageous. This movie is no exception.
RYAN: Every iconic image that we expect to see is there – great shots of the city, incredible fashion and, of course, fabulous shoes. It’s so gay too. You can totally tell a gay man is behind it.
CAROLINE: Would we have it any other way? Honestly, Kim Catrall almost stole the movie for me. Some of her lines are just beyond hilarious, and she delivers them perfectly. I laughed out loud several times. I also gasped a few times too.
RYAN: And even though this movie is nowhere near as heavy and dramatic as the first one was, Carrie does have a few depressed and even bitchy moments. There were a couple of times I kinda didn’t like her. She wasn’t being a good friend. But that just makes her more complex.
CAROLINE: I noticed in one scene with Charlotte and Miranda that Kristin Davis was definitely working the Botox. It might have affected her performance a little, when she needed to emote. But she’s always been a little wooden. I find her delivery to be the least natural of the four girls.
RYAN: Cynthia Nixon is probably the best actress of the bunch. I just didn’t feel like her character had that much do in this. And she had some gimmicky lines that could have been painful, like “Abu Dhabi do!” that she was able to pull off because she’s so natural. And I think she’s aging the best of them all.
CAROLINE: She looks fabulous! Lesbianism suits her. Speaking of fabulous, the men in this movie are H-O-T. Chris Noth and John Corbett clearly hit the gym – and maybe the hair dye – before filming.
RYAN: We got to cover the red carpet at the premiere on Monday night, and Aidan is so much hotter in person. In the movie, his upper lip looks very thin.
CAROLINE: Oh please, he’s gorgeous. The movie is a totally fun adventure with over-the-top scenery and costumes. Some of the outfits are kind of absurd, but I think we’ve come to expect that from Patricia Field.
RYAN: It’s definitely long at almost two and a half hours, but I ate up every minute of it. It could have gone even longer. I pray this movie does gangbusters at the box office and they make a third!
CAROLINE: We always bitch about movies being too long, but this is one franchise where it could be five hours long and it still wouldn’t be enough. I’ll never tire of it. Two and a half hours never went by so fast.
— BOTTOM LINE —
RYAN: This movie is everything you want it to be and more as a fan. It’s such great escapism, so opulent and much lighter than the first one. It’s a great next chapter for some of our favorite characters ever.
CAROLINE: This movie is clearly for us. We loved every minute. I realize it’s not a remarkable feat of film making and it’s not breaking ground or anything, but it’s so much fun and it’s really for the fans. I couldn’t believe how much I liked it even the second time around. We’re so happy the girls are back!
