THE HOAX
CAROLINE: Yay! Finally, a good movie!
RYAN: And let the record show that I practically had to drag you to it.
CAROLINE: That is such b.s. I wanted to see “The Hoax,” it just wasn’t my first choice for the evening.
RYAN: Well, it was a very good film with an impeccable cast.
CAROLINE: There was brilliant chemistry between Richard Gere and Alfred Molina. It was such a pleasure to watch.
RYAN: It was fun to see that kind of chemistry between friends in a movie and not just love interests. And I’m gonna be bold and say that I could see Oscar nominations coming for the performances in this film.
CAROLINE: I’m with you. They were all excellent.
RYAN: The weakest link was Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden with her horrific accent.
CAROLINE: She had a bizarre accent that for all I know could have been dead-on. But I couldn’t determine whether it was supposed to be Swedish or German. And she had a terrible wig.
RYAN: The costumes, set design, cars and everything were so spot-on 70s. They really captured the era well. But the wigs were just horrendous.
CAROLINE: Hope Davis’s wig was an atrocity. But the movie is great – it’s “based on the actual events” to quote the opening credit sequence. It’s a really interesting story that I didn’t know much about, so it was fun to learn something about this dude who faked a Howard Hughes autobiography.
RYAN: It’s a good screenplay and it came out at the right time – a few years after “The Aviator,” so Howard Hughes isn’t all over the cinematic consciousness right now.
CAROLINE: Well, this is quite a different movie from “The Aviator,” but it does share the Howard Hughes link. It’s a touch too long but that’s ok. It had a lot of angst-ridden moments and it made me nervous at times, in a good way.
RYAN: Bottom line?
CAROLINE: This is a good flick and I’d definitely recommend it. It’s probably not for the crowd which is eagerly anticipating “Spider-Man 3,” but for anyone who likes a smart movie, this one’s for you.
RYAN: It’s a solid movie that’s very entertaining and mature. I don’t think the kids are gonna run out and see it – it’s more for an adult crowd. But it was a pleasure, and I really enjoyed it.
