THE WOLFMAN

RYAN: After a 14-month push back, we’re finally welcoming the new version of Universal monsters’ classic The Wolfman.

CAROLINE: I am so bummed I didn’t get to see this with you. Any movie that’s been bumped back five times and then finally gets a February release doesn’t sound so hot, but it has a good cast and I was interested.

RYAN: I love good scary movies and period films. These actors are top-notch. And I remember all of the old, classic monster movies so I thought this had potential written all over it. Sadly, however, it just didn’t work.

CAROLINE: I’m not shocked to hear that since they had such trouble with the release date.

RYAN: The biggest problem and the biggest offense in the film were really the actors. They were just bad. And I don’t think we’ve ever said that before in a review. Benicio Del Toro, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt – all rather awful performances.

CAROLINE: Which is surprising because they’re all Oscar caliber, literally.

RYAN: I know. So I’m left to think it was a bad director and a bad script.

CAROLINE: Wow, OK. Was it creepy and gross?

RYAN: Very. They were obviously going for gore which they achieved handsomely.

CAROLINE: How was the period piece-ness of it all?

RYAN: They costumes were fine, but nothing revolutionary. Emily had to be in black and dark colors the whole time and after seeing how great she was dressed in The Young Victoria, I thought she looked boring in this one.

CAROLINE: Anything stand out as good?

RYAN: The score – Danny Elfman did it and he’s genius.

CAROLINE: How was the wolfman transformation?

RYAN: Pretty amazing. The effects were pretty good. But after the first couple transformations into The Wolfman, it became cliché and cheesy. Like, you’d see a full moon and everyone would just start to laugh.

— BOTTOM LINE —

RYAN: Although there was some iconic imagery that looked very cool, the movie is in parts boring, slow moving. You end up just waiting for the next cool effect. And you feel like you’re watching kids act in an 8th grade play. Stay away.
