EDGE OF DARKNESS

RYAN: Edge of Darkness is the new film starring religious zealot/angry drunk, Mel Gibson. But now that’s out of the way, I have to admit I loved the movie.

CAROLINE: It was really intense. I knew it would be exciting based on the trailer, but I wasn’t prepared for the fact it would make me, like, yell out loud in the theater.

RYAN: Well it’s violent the likes of a Quentin Tarantino movie.

CAROLINE: The violence was shocking and it comes very quickly, so be ready. And it’s gory.

RYAN: But good.

CAROLINE: I couldn’t help but dig Mel Gibson. He’s still got it. People in the audience were cheering.

RYAN: And though his wrinkles are deep and many, he looks pretty good for a man o’ his age.

CAROLINE: He’s definitely showing his age, but I like it. In this time of Hollywood and Michael Douglas, I appreciate a man who has a wrinkle or five.

RYAN: This is a smart movie you have to pay attention to in order to follow. It’s a great cast, script and director.

CAROLINE: He’s the same director who did Casino Royale. He has the whole action/thriller thing down really well. I really enjoyed this. It’s a little bit of a guilty pleasure; not a fine film, but very exciting. It was a tad confusing in parts, but I managed to follow it pretty well.

RYAN: I love that it’s shot in a way that the camera angles are almost Hitchcockian. From the very beginning just the camera angles make you feel nervous and on-edge in the audience. That’s great.

CAROLINE: Mel can still play a badass. Bruce Willis, you’ve got your competition.

RYAN: Take note, Indiana Jones. The supporting cast was great too; we love Denis O’Hare who has done a lot lately. Broadway, TV, movies, you name it.

CAROLINE: The girl who played the daughter was great too, albeit in a small role.

RYAN: And I liked the girl who played her friend. She was Alice in the recent SyFy Channel Alice in Wonderland mini.

CAROLINE: Her one big scene is insane! And Ray Winstone, of Beowulf, was also in it. It’s just a gripping, edge of your seat, intense movie. Honestly, there were times I wasn’t on the edge of my seat but if I’d known what was about to happen, I definitely would have been. It was pretty shocking at times.

RYAN: It has a good beginning, a good middle and a great ending. How often does that happen?

— BOTTOM LINE —

CAROLINE: After seeing the trailer, I thought I might enjoy this movie and I did. It’s certainly not for someone who doesn’t want to see violence because those moments are quite bloody. It’s fun – a good popcorn flick for January. We’ve been waiting for one.

RYAN: It’s the best of the month, for sure. It’s worthy of getting out and seeing on the big screen this weekend!
