LEAP YEAR

RYAN: I had a celeb sighting at the “Leap Year” screening. Did you know Piers Morgan was in the audience?

CAROLINE: Somehow I missed that. But here’s my question about this movie – why 2010? It’s not even a leap year, Amy Adams!

RYAN: I love her so much; she can do no wrong in my book. This is definitely a throw-away film for her, but I’ll see anything she’s in. She’s so adorable that she made this movie worth it for me.

CAROLINE: Barely. Honestly, if this movie didn’t star her and Matthew Goode, it wouldn’t have had a fraction of the appeal. Even with them I was barely able to tolerate this. It was so predictable and lame and unfunny. I laughed only once. And the situations they got themselves in were so improbable that even the most gullible in the audience were probably unable to suspend disbelief.

RYAN: We’ve seen this movie many times before in the form of Legally Blonde, Just Married with Brittany Murphy and Ashton Kutcher and Sweet Home Alabama. It’s familiar territory but I still thought it was cute and well acted. It had some clever moments. For the younger set who hasn’t seen those other movies, this will be fresh for them.

CAROLINE: I guess; but both stars are in their 30s, so it’s not exactly a teen movie. I didn’t hate it, but it’s just such a huge contrast from the Oscar caliber films we’ve seen of late. It really is January, people! There may have been one or two cute moments, but mostly I was just groaning inwardly.

RYAN: You certainly shouldn’t choose to see this movie if you haven’t seen some of the December releases like Sherlock Holmes or Up in the Air. But if you’ve already seen all the good ones, and you’re in the mood for a romantic comedy… ah, who are we kidding, you should go see It’s Complicated. It’s a much better movie.

CAROLINE: I think we all know what to expect from a movie that comes out in the first week of January. This one is palatable only because of its cast.

RYAN: I really didn’t like the ending either. It was so unrealistic.

CAROLINE: Yeah, it was weird. Of course, what you think is going to happen does happen; but with an odd twist. It was silly and unnecessary.

RYAN: Having said that, I loved Amy Adams’s shoes and outfits. She’s so cute.

CAROLINE: Her hair looked great. I loved her shoes as well, though no one I know is clomping around rural Ireland in Louboutins. You know I love a good rom com no matter how cheesy, but this one just isn’t very good.

— BOTTOM LINE —

RYAN: It’s a cute movie but not truly memorable.

CAROLINE: I’d say it’s a rental at best. At this point in moviedom, there are many better options out there. Because of Amy Adams we’ll call it a rental, but honestly, if it were anyone else, we’d say skip it.
