2010 Golden Globe Nominations

RYAN: OMG it’s a national holiday – the announcement of the Golden Globe nominations!

CAROLINE: I totally DVR’ed The Today Show so I could watch the announcements live. Who asked Justin Timberlake to be there and why did he feel the need to be such a cut-up?

RYAN: Seriously. Check yourself, buddy; you’re not a real actor yet.

CAROLINE: The awards show will be broadcast live on NBC January 17th, at 8pm Eastern. Can’t wait!

RYAN: You better get your Rice Krispies treats ready.

CAROLINE: Don’t I always? The noms are so great this year… and we were pretty good with our predictions.

RYAN: Let’s start with Best Pic – Drama.

BEST MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA

• Avatar

• The Hurt Locker

• Inglourious Basterds

• Precious

• Up in the Air

RYAN: I loved “Avatar” but it’ll probably go to “Up in the Air.” And where’s “Invictus”?

CAROLINE: Yeah, it was weird that “Invictus” got Best Director and Actor but not Picture. But whatever; it wasn’t that great.

RYAN: Btw if Sandra B. wins Best Actress, I’m moving to Canada!

CAROLINE: I really liked her in this movie though. She did an awesome job.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA

• Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria

• Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side

• Helen Mirren, The Last Station

• Carey Mulligan, An Education

• Gabourey Sidibe, Precious

RYAN: Please explain to me how Tobey Maguire is in the Best Actor category? Everyone else was so good! He was a robot!

CAROLINE: Honey, you’re in the minority on that one. Everyone thought all three stars were great – even Natalie Portman!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA

• Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart

• George Clooney, Up in the Air

• Colin Firth, A Single Man

• Morgan Freeman, Invictus

• Tobey Maguire, Brothers

RYAN: “Nine” should win Best Pic – Musical or Comedy, no question.

CAROLINE: Actually, I liked both “Julie & Julia” and “It’s Complicated” better. And it annoys me that “Nine” gets nominated in the same category; musicals and comedies have nothing to do with each other.

BEST MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL

(500) Days of Summer

• The Hangover

• It’s Complicated

• Julie & Julia

• Nine

RYAN: And now for Best Comedic Actress… again with the Sandra Bullock? What planet are we on?

CAROLINE: The double Meryl nominations is fabulous. She’s so deserving. But yes, Sandy B. should not be nominated for a dumb movie like “The Proposal.” And Julia Roberts in “Duplicity”?? That’s just nuts.

RYAN: You know I’m rooting for Marion!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL

• Sandra Bullock, The Proposal

• Marion Cotillard, Nine

• Julia Roberts, Duplicity

• Meryl Streep, It’s Complicated

• Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia

RYAN: I know you don’t agree, but I think R.D. Jr. should take Best Actor for “Sherlock.” But I’d also be pleased with D.D.L.

CAROLINE: Actually, even though I didn’t love “Sherlock,” I did think Robert Downey was great as always. I wouldn’t mind him winning.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL

• Matt Damon, The Informant!

• Daniel Day-Lewis, Nine

• Robert Downey Jr., Sherlock Holmes

• Joseph Gordon-Levitt, (500) Days of Summer

• Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man

RYAN: Animated Best Pic should be “The Princess and the Frog,” but will probably go to “Up” just because of it’s first 15 minutes, right?

CAROLINE: Definitely. “Up” is a shoo-in.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

• Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

• Coraline

• Fantastic Mr. Fox

• The Princess and the Frog

• Up

RYAN: I have to catch up on many of the Foreign Film noms.

CAROLINE: I’ve been bad on those this year. I still need to see Penélope in “Broken Embraces”!

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

• Baaria (Italy)

• Broken Embraces (Spain)

• The Maid (Chile)

• A Prophet (France)

• The White Ribbon (Germany)

RYAN: Best Supporting Actress is one of the most competitive categories. There’s not as clear of a deserving winner as with the main actors.

CAROLINE: I love that both “Up in the Air” gals were nominated.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE

• Penélope Cruz, Nine

• Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air

• Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air

• Mo’Nique, Precious

• Julianne Moore, A Single Man

RYAN: I’m thrilled that Stanley Tucci got nominated for Supporting Actor, but I bet he’s even more excited about it.

CAROLINE: He had two amazing performances this year. I’m wowed by him all over again. But the guy from “Inglourious Basterds” might nab this one.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE

• Matt Damon, Invictus

• Woody Harrelson, The Messenger

• Christopher Plummer, The Last Station

• Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones

• Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds

RYAN: How did Rob Marshall get snubbed in the Director category?!?! That is so rich!

CAROLINE: I’m not shocked; “Nine” was no “Chicago.” Too many good movies this year, I guess.

BEST DIRECTOR

• Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker

• James Cameron, Avatar

• Clint Eastwood, Invictus

• Jason Reitman, Up in the Air

• Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds

RYAN: How cool would it be is “District 9” took best screenplay? I think “Sherlock Holmes” could have been in here too.

CAROLINE: I want Jason Reitman to win. So funny that he wrote this screenplay alone but some other guy had already written a version too so they had to give him credit.

BEST SCREENPLAY

• Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, District 9

• Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker

• Nancy Meyers, It’s Complicated

• Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, Up in the Air

• Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds

CAROLINE: You get much more excited about the music categories than I do, but I wouldn’t be surprised if “Up” wins this.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

• Michael Giacchino, Up

• Marvin Hamlisch, The Informant!

• James Horner, Avatar

• Abel Korzeniowski, A Single Man

• Karen O. and Carter Burwell, Where the Wild Things Are

RYAN: How is there no entry from “The Princess and the Frog” in the Best Song category?

CAROLINE: Hmm, that’s weird. And why is Kate Hudson’s lame song from “Nine” nominated?

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

• “Cinema Italiano,” Music & Lyrics by Maury Yeston (Nine)

• “I Want to Come Home,” Music & Lyrics by Paul McCartney (Everybody’s Fine)

• “I Will See You,” Music by James Horner, Simon Franglen; Lyrics by James Horner, Simon Franglen and Kuk Harrell (Avatar)

• “The Weary Kind,” Music & Lyrics by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart)

• “Winter,” Music by U2; Lyrics by Bono (Brothers)

RYAN: It’s gonna be a great show! I love that Ricky Gervais is hosting!

CAROLINE: That was a brilliant choice. He’s freaking hilarious. Can’t wait for 1/17!
