ZODIAC

RYAN: We finally done went ahead and seen “Zodiac.”

CAROLINE: It was hotly anticipated.

RYAN: Maybe next time you won’t leave town on such a big opening weekend and we can actually see the movie the day it comes out?

CAROLINE: My apologies.

RYAN: Accepted. But I must say, I’m left feeling very empty by this movie.

CAROLINE: Really? That’s not the word I would use. But the movie is quite long, I won’t lie to you. It almost felt like a documentary in some ways; about the way a serial killer terrorized California for over a decade.

RYAN: I thought it was well-directed, well-written and expertly acted. Everyone in it was excellent. I mean, Jake Gyllenhaal is gorgeous and wonderful.

CAROLINE: See, I didn’t love him as much. I thought he was the weakest link in the cast. He was good in some scenes, but then seemed too young and sort of miscast in others.

RYAN: I disagree. I thought he was amazing. But I may just be enamored with him lately.

CAROLINE: [laughs’]

RYAN: And Robert Downey Jr. was phenom!

CAROLINE: He is so compelling. There is something about his voice that is riveting. I could even see him getting a Best Supporting Actor nomination for this movie.

RYAN: Them’s big words! His wardrobe was so funny.

CAROLINE: Loved the neckerchiefs. And his hair! Everyone’s facial hair is fabulous.

RYAN: Very fabtastic. There are tons of great actors in this.

CAROLINE: It’s a cast of thousands for sure. And look for a cameo from Ione Skye when you least expect it.

RYAN: I’m feeling empty though because I don’t like that feeling of uncertainty at the end. I’m unfulfilled; not by the movie, but by the plot. I hate that the Zodiac killer could still be out there. I’d rather see “Silence of the Lambs” where they finally get the bad guy in the end.

CAROLINE: Well, “Silence of the Lambs” is a work of fiction whereas “Zodiac” is based on actual murders that occurred, so you can’t always get what you want, Ryan. The simple truth is they never caught the Zodiac.

RYAN: Just so unsatisfying.

CAROLINE: Well, they had one good suspect but he died before they could arrest him.

RYAN: How is it that sometimes somebody kills one person and they get caught, but then someone else can kill lots of people and get away with it?

CAROLINE: [laughs’ It has to do with wiliness.

RYAN: It’s all in the handwriting.

CAROLINE: If you have neat handwriting, you can get away with murder in America.

RYAN: Honestly, this movie is long and there are some squirm-in-your-seat moments. But also some edge-of-your-seat moments.

CAROLINE: It’s certainly not for the faint of heart. There are some very graphic murder scenes, which are especially creepy because you know they really happened.

RYAN: Bottom line?

CAROLINE: Hmm. I love David Fincher and I loved the look of this movie. It really does capture the essence of the era, just with the hairstyles alone. I liked this movie but I don’t know if I loved it as much as some of his other movies, like “The Game.”

RYAN: I concur. I was totally entertained and it’s definitely worth the eleven dollars. But this isn’t a film I love and am going to own on DVD.

CAROLINE: But wasn’t it nice to see Anthony Edwards getting some work again?

RYAN: Yes.

CAROLINE: He has a stellar hairpiece.

Thanks For Viewing The ZODIAC
