OBSERVE AND REPORT

RYAN: There’s a new comedy in town starring Seth Rogen, “Observe and Report.”

CAROLINE: Honestly, Seth Rogen is the least funny thing about this movie, which surprised me. He’s not bad or anything, but he’s not hilarious either. He’s definitely the star, but the goings on around him are much funnier than he is.

RYAN: Totally. He’s in my favorite scene though, which is very quiet and profane. It made me laugh for days.

CAROLINE: This movie is a combination of “Eh, this is kind of funny,” and “Oh my God, that was the funniest, bawdiest, dirtiest thing I’ve ever seen.” It was almost akin to “Borat” in some ways. And it was surprisingly violent at one point.

RYAN: What you just said perfectly articulates what this movie is. The trailers and commercials are a little misleading. I thought it was going to be a broad comedy, but it isn’t; it’s actually quite dark. I’m most disappointed that even though it co-stars Anna Faris, she’s barely in it.

CAROLINE: She doesn’t have much to do in this movie, but she looks hot.

RYAN: She has definitely kept her “House Bunny” bod.

CAROLINE: There’s another girl who plays a potential love interest for Seth Rogen, Collette Wolfe. I didn’t recognize her from any other movies, but apparently she’s been in a few Will Ferrell type comedies.

RYAN: She’s fine in this, but she’s too pretty for Seth Rogen. And I didn’t like how they tried to make her look ugly by just by making her wear her hair up and very little makeup. She was still too pretty.

CAROLINE: It’s weird to see Seth Rogen too, because he was still in his fat phase when they filmed this. Knowing what he looks like now all buffed out makes you remember how ugly he can be. His teeth are horrible. He actually skeeved me out several times while watching this movie. But I suppose some people see a teddy bear appeal in him.

RYAN: Celia Weston, who we got to interview once, plays his mother, and she is brilliant.

CAROLINE: She made me fall on the floor laughing in one scene.

RYAN: She’s almost award worthy in the same way Robert Downey Jr. was in “Tropic Thunder.”

CAROLINE: I wondered if they gave her some fat padding in one scene because she looked enormous.

RYAN: No, she’s just a big gal.

CAROLINE: I really hope it’s padding. Ray Liotta is also in this, and his skin looks strange and blotchy.

RYAN: He looks so much better than he did in “Crossing Over” though. This movie must have been filmed pre-plastic surgery for him; either that or the surgery has settled down. He looks much better now.

— BOTTOM LINE —

RYAN: This movie is not at all what you expect. I can’t fully recommend it because it’s probably a little much for some people in its violence and raunchiness. It’s very funny in parts, but it also has some weird, awkward moments that didn’t really work. It could be a rental.

CAROLINE: I’m inclined to agree. It has some truly outrageous moments that I really didn’t expect, and it’s not a great movie, but it definitely made me howl with laughter several times. It’s a little shocking; in a good way if you’re over 18. The supporting cast is good too, and it includes that guy who’s on TV’s “Scrubs” as well as “Parks and Recreation,” which premieres tonight. If you can handle the raunchiness of this movie, you’ll enjoy it; but it’s not a true must see.
